I was reminded today at my appointment with my midwife how important the right health care provider is when you're looking for a natural childbirth. (Still weird to me that you have to "look" for it, shouldn't it just find you if it's natural? Hm.)
Anyway, I'm working with a midwife practice, and saw a different NMW than I usually do. (Earlier thread here, I figured I should have appointments with different midwives since they staff the hospital on a rotation.) I asked about the midwife staff as a whole and support for natural childbirth. She sat right up and started telling me about how excited they all get when someone wants to pursue a natural childbirth.
Excited. It's not an inconvenience to them. It's not some weird hippie wackadoodle notion. They get excited because our bodies were built to do it. She said at least 80% of her patients get the epi at the first possible moment, and she said it's exciting to work with someone who really wants to see the birth through naturally.
If they were dismissive of my desire for NCB, I know now I would be looking for a different practice. I feel like I'm even more strengthened to do this thing because even the NMWs I haven't met yet are totally on my side.
I don't think I would have been so prepared or confident for these early (important) steps if it weren't for this board on JM. Your stories and encouragement are so valuable. Thanks!
