I got to attend a Dr. Bergman conference yesterday He's the doctor who coined kangaroo mother care and skin-to-skin for premature babies. It was hosted by our local breastfeeding coalition and LLL. I went with my doula and two of her other clients. It was such a fascinating conference! It was geared for medical professionals so I was a little concerned that it might be over my head but Dr. Bergman is such a funny and charismatic speaker that it wasn't at all. He spoke about kangaroo care for preemies which was mind blowing. I had no idea that the typical hospital treatment of premature babies is so damaging to them and just how detrimental it is to separate a newborn from its mother. He also talked a lot about doulas and how his hospital has saved millions of dollars since hiring a doula for every shift because their intervention and c-section rates are now so low. He is such an inspirational doctor and I feel like I learned so much at this conference. It was so cool to hear about all the statistics, studies and thousands of hours of research he's done on maternal and newborn care. It's all stuff we "know" but I realize I didn't really know the half of it.
