Well, I guess you can call me a hypocrite, but I'm chickening out and being induced on Saturday. I had a doctor's appointment today and am 2cm dilated already and baby weighs approximately 8 lbs, and with this huge change in due date (from August 7th to July 22nd), doctor and I both thought it best to be induced. I also have a bit of a low fluid level, so I'll be induced on Saturday at 3am.

My update will be in the August DDC on Saturday, probably posted by Aine.

I know, I'm a wimp... but I won't be taking any pain meds.

ETA: One of the main reasons that they're inducing is because of a hospital stay I had about 2 weeks ago, which affected my kidneys and my gallbladder. They don't want me to have any issues so they'd rather me come in and start labor than labor at home and heaven knows what go on while my kidneys shut down (as happened a few weeks ago, when I was having nothing but MILD cramps, and I almost didn't go in). It was a scary time, and not something I want to repeat. Just thought I'd clarify so you don't think I'm a total loser.

With the problems going on with your kidneys, you aren't a hypocrite. That is something that could put your health at risk.

I however wouldn't believe the weight thing cause that could be off by 2lbs either way. And holy cow, when and why did they change your due date? Usually they won't change your due date after around 20 weeks cause your uterus measures differently depending on where the baby is lying and the fact that you have already had a baby.

I wish you the best with your induction. Hoping you have a easy labor and deliver and healthy happy baby!!

Oh hun , your not doing this just because you are getting uncomfy , or impatient or your doc just offered it to you and you said sure why not , you have a health concern to think about and are making the decision you feel is best for you and your baby . I wish you all the luck and hope it all go's well and that you get the birth you hope and wish for , induction or not

I'm not a Dr, but it seems to me an induction would be harder on your kidneys than a natural labor. Added medication for the iduction for your kidneys to deal with, much harder contractions....... I don't know....

But of course you have to make the decision that you are comfortable with. Of course the reasons you listed first are just totally unreliable.....U/s estimate of birth weight can be WAY off, Being 2 cm dialated is very normal at this phase. I was 4 cm with my last two for 3 weeks! And the low fluid level is also VERY difficult to estimate. Many nurses who have piped up on this and other boards talk about how when these women who were supposed to have low fluid had their water broken and liters just gushed out of them. Drink lots of water, take a bath, and if you do have low fluid it will most likely right itself.

I was induced with my first and I will tell you it is no fun. I wanted all natural, no interventions, but I got pre-eclamptic and was induced. It was pretty bad. I ended up asking for the epidural and got a dose of staydol, which made me high. I didn't get the epi because the baby was born before they could get to that, but the Staydol affected the baby some and he had a few breathing issues after birth. It royally sucked and I will never be induced again unless there is a major emergency. I guess what I want to say is, be prepared. Induction is harder on you and it is harder on the baby. I hope you can get through it without the meds, but if you break down, well, you wouldn't be the first. Goin the way nature intended is much better such a difference in the contractions, but if it isn't an option, well, I wish you good luck!

I don't think you are hypocritical at all! You made this decision out necessity, not for your own convenience. ((Hugs))

I went through induction with my daughter, and it wasn't tough at all, and Emilee was super alert when she was born (I too had Staydol, and won't have it again b/c it just made me nauseated). Thanks for the concerns, but there are actual real reasons why I'm consenting to this induction instead of waiting everything out... one of the reasons being that unless my water breaks before I get to the hospital (unlikely, as I was somwhere between 4-6 cm dilated when it was broken for me with my daughter), I won't know I am going into labor. Even with the induction last time, I didn't really feel any major contractions until I was close to 7cm dilated and quickly got to 10cm. I don't want to take that chance, especially with all the kidney/gallbladder/sepsis (sp???) issues I've had over the past few weeks.

Thanks for your support and advice, everyone!! I have a few people's cell #, so you'll likely see an update on the June 2006 PR or the August 2007 DDC boards on Saturday afternoon!!

I am still pretty much planning on doing everything as naturally as possible (am a little bit nervous about possibly having another catheter, but other than that, am planning for as few interventions as possible). I'll update with my birth story when I return.

ETA: To those of you who talked about him not being the weight they say he is, I can tell that either he is bigger or I have a huge amount of fluid, because there is definitely more space being taken up this time around than with Emilee. So in comparison, even if he comes out at 7lbs, 7oz like Emilee, there must be a lot of fluid in there!! Also, the reason for the change in due date is that they never did an u/s for a due date when I changed doctors, so I haven't had one since 17 weeks, and I knew they were off (b/c hello, I knew when I had sex and when I didn't), but didn't know by how much. July 22nd makes a LOT more sense than August 7th.

Hey Tiff! I read in the debates you were going to be induced but now I know the whole story why. Don't beat yourself up ~ there are legitimate reasons to have these medical interventions. Of course we support your decision silly!

Sorry ladies for the lack of update!! We did get to come home on Sunday night (the less time spent in the hospital, the better, in my opinion) and we're doing well. Christian BF like a champ!
