I just got back from my HSG. It did not go well at all! First of all, it was excruciatingly painful. It was so bad that I was screaming and begging my doctor to stop. It felt like the dye was burning me. I was expecting some mild cramping, but this was so unbelievably horrible. I was lucky enough to have a good friend come in with me who works at the hospital. She helped talk me through the pain and held my hand. I would've been so much worse off if she wasn't there. Anyway, so not only did the procedure hurt way more than I ever expected, but there is something "not right" with my left tube. It is open, but the doctor said it doesn't look normal. My right tube is fine. I may have to go see a specialist in Portland (3 hours away) to have a laparoscopy. I don't know for sure yet about that. My doctor is going to send the pics down there and have them analyze them. They may say it's fine or they may say I have to go down there. This is going to cost me a fortune, but I don't care. I will do what it takes. My doctor was super sweet and did her best to comfort me. I was just laying there crying because I'm broken. She was reassuring and saying that I'm not broken and I'm still young. I was like "I'm not young! I'm 38!" and she said, "well, you look 30"...which of course made me smile and thank her. I still haven't gotten the results from my BF's SA yet so I'm really worried that those will come back bad and both of us have issues, which will make this even harder. Oh, and now I'm bleeding which just makes it that much worse.
I'm going to take a couple of benedryl and drink a glass of wine and spend the rest of the day napping on the couch and watching Jerseylicious.

Hugs to you!! Mine were a bit uncomfy, but never painful like that. During my HSGs, it was discovered that something wasn't completely right with my right tube. It ended up being partially (almost completely) blocked and looked funny on the screen. Unfortunately, my right ovary was the dominant follicle making one. We tried Clomid and eventually moved on to injectables, finally waking up my left ovary. It took a bit of time, but our dream finally came true - and naturally (and I'm 38 too).
Please keep positive!! Your dreams will come true!

Thank you ladies!! I don't know what I'd do without the amazing support here! The nurse called me yesterday and my doctor definitely wants me to go see the specialist. They specialize in IVF but also do all kinds of fertility testing and have a great reputation. The problem is, they're 3 hours away in Portland so it'll be a juggle. I'm going in to talk to my doctor next week to find out exactly what she saw and why she wants me to go. Right now, I have no answers at all and the nurse couldn't tell me anything.
Jennifer, your story is very interesting. I will talk to my doctor about that and see what she thinks. It is definitely encouraging to see that there can be fairly simple solutions and I might be able to avoid surgery.
Dara, I'm so sorry your cousin had the same experience as me. That was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I wouldn't wish it on anyone!

(((hugs))) It was painful, but for me it thankfully was over quickly. I hope you are able to juggle Portland and get some answers soon. I also hope your DH's SA comes back fine. I know how it is for both partners to have fertility problems, it's horrible. Hang in there sweetie!!!

Thanks Becky! I finally got my BF's results back and thankfully he is totally fine. So we just have one obstacle to overcome. If it had been both of us, it would have been a major setback. Phew!

I'm lurking bc I saw the "HSG" in the title post & feel I need to post. We tried for a year before getting pg with our first. During that year I had an ectopic pg which resulted in the loss of my right tube. Then we did 3 unsuccessful rounds of Clomid. The last month I had a HSG test done (painful yes!) which showed my remaining left tube all clear. I took a break from really TTC (emotionally I needed to) that month I had the HSG done...and that month I got pg! I had a textbook wonderful pg and beautiful, perfect little boy.
I just wanted to share my story with you to give you hope. BTW, it took one month to get pg with our 2nd
Good luck to you
