I guess I'm in the minority here, but I felt charting was great for me. Temping quickly became a habit for me, so that too wasn't an issue. Learning the signs to look for (CM & CP) helped me greatly with my stress levels when we were TTC all those months before getting pg. Especially since I had those erratic cycles - Long cycles, delayed Oing, several cycles where I never did O, and OPKs never worked for me either. And it allowed me to see that I had a short LP. After a few cycles of charting, even with my erratic cycles, I could see the pattern. I knew to expect to O around CD29ish (got as early as CD19ish once I started metformin with my PCOS), and I also knew that if I got beyond CD40 that I wasn't going to O and would then see the doc for progesterone to end the cycle. All of that knowledge, plus the charts I printed, also let my doctors see what was going on with my body too.
I don't chart everything right now, temps & that, cause we're not currently TTC and also that we cannot get pg with MA. But from all that I did learn when I was charting everything, I know that I O'd a couple of days ago and AF will arrive next Fri/Sat for me.
Even if you don't want to chart, I still think Fertility Friend has great info to read about our bodies and also I recommend the Taking Charge of Your Fertility book too.
