Lesson 1 -

We will build off this lesson, so make sure you are comfortable with it before you move on. If you have questions please don't hesitate to respond in this thread.

Lindsay's Photoshop Tutorial (for those with Photoshop)

Adobe Elements Trial

I have used white & red but you can use any colors!

Step1: open up new layer (As in photo)
Step 2: set width 150 height 21 click ok

Step 3: set colors by clicking on the color blocks

Step 4: click view and grid so that your block looks like the one in the pic

(set grid preferences by clicking on EDIT, Preferences , then grid and setting it as the picture shows)

Step 5: zoom all the way in

step 6: choose the pencil tool and set it to 1 pt

step 7: add color to block with bucket tool

step 8: select 2nd color

step9: with the pencil tool on 1pt go down 3 blocks all the way around

step 10: duplicate layer by right clicking and duplicating ... do this 2 times so there is 3 layers

close the eyes beside all the layers except the bottom one by clicking on them to close and make sure you click on bottom layer so it is in the gray

step 11: change color

step 12: one pixel down and one over make 2 blocks filled in skip 4 fill in 2 more repeat

the above pic is what you should have now

step 13: close the eye one the bottom layer and open the eye on the middle layer and click on it

step 14: on this layer do the same as the last except instead of skipping 1 at the beginning skip 3! and then 4 just like the 1st layer

step 15: when you are done close the eye on this layer and open the eye on the top layer and click on it

step 16: instead of skipping 1 or 3 at the beginning skip 5 and then fill in 2 and skip 4 ...just like the other two

step 17: when all three layers are done click on the text tool and type something make sure the size of your font fits in the blinkie

step 18: duplicate layer 2 times

step 19: close all eyes except the 1st blinkie layer and the 1st text layer

step 20: click layer at the top and merge visible

step 21: close eye open eye on the 2nd blinkie layer and the 2nd text layer merge visible

step 22: close eyes open 3rd of blinkie layer and 3rd of text layer merge visible

you should have...

step 23: click file , save for web

step 24: check animate, set for .2 or .5 speed

step 25: save, ok

you should now have...

Here is your prize after making your 1st blinky (made by SpinkD)

I think I missed something. Am I supposed to duplicate the layer a couple times so I end up with 3 layers? In step 8, there's only 1 layer, then the in the next step it's telling me to make the other layers invisible... but I don't have any other layers.

That is what it looks like to me, but I don't have elements, so I can't tell you. I think LeAnn has just left for a couple days. Let me download a trial of elements to see if I can figure it out for you.

Ok, I'm done. The grid was really hurting my eyes.

Looks awesome! Thanks for making me a blinkie, lol. J/K!

I bet there is a way that can be saved as a template, so you don't have to do that everytime. I am downloading a trial of elements right now, so maybe I can figure it out. I didn't realize how much more inexpensive it is compared to photoshop. I might get it for my home computer!

I bought mine on eBay -- even cheaper that way! I paid $25 for just the disc (no box, but it had never been registered). It's 4.0 (not the newest version) but still quite the deal. Something tells me my DH would have me committed if I spent a small fortune on CS2 just to make blinkies & siggies for JM.

Here is my elements blinkie, lol

I figured out you can do the dots the same way in elements as I showed you in photoshop. I like the way the other dots look a little better, but it is a heck of a lot easier on the eyes!

Thanks for the tip! I just made another one and sort of did it your way. PSE 4.0 doesn't appear to have an option to link layers so instead I made two layers and just made sure the 2nd one didn't start in the same spot. So here's my 2nd attempt. The dots are pretty hard to see, guess I should've made them black like the text. Whoops!

I'll try lesson 2 later, kiddo's waking up from his nap now.

Try this. Click on the one dot layer and then CTRL click on the other. I THINK that will highlight them both and act as a link??? It does it in PSE 5 at least.

Thanks, that worked! There isn't a 'merge linked' option - guess they weren't expecting me to figure out how to link them. I just made everything else invisible and used merge visible instead. Worked fine. So here's lesson one, take two.

Look at all these new PROs we have! Great job!! And you even have multiple frames of text and we haven't even gotten there yet!

I am working on mine, I am super busy, so it is taking a while, but I have Paint shop. Its close to photoshop, with a few things in different places and called different things, but I figured it out. I just need an animation program now!

There is a really simple and free animation program called Microsoft Gif Animator. I am not sure how it will work with PSP, but it is worth a try. Just do a web search for it and you can probably find a link to download it.
