Well, I finally got my all natural birth! Aaron Thomas was born on St Patrick's Day in a hospital, delivered by a Dr!!
My water broke on the 16th, at 11:45 pm after having contractions (not painful) all evening. I went in to the hospital and was assessed at 1cm, 50% effaced, the same as I had been for the past two weeks. The nurse asked me about preferences for birth and I told her I didn't do well with narcotics and that I had used nitrous oxide with my last daughter, but it didn't lessen the pain, so I was going to try to go without. I also mentioned that there was no way that anyone was sticking a big needle in my spine!!
My contractions were not getting any stronger or closer together so at 3:30 am I decided to try a little nipple stimulation. That immediately brought on intense contractions that were much closer together. At about 4:20 am I decided to get in the shower. The nurse decided to check me again first since it had been 4 hours since my last check. I was still at 1-2cm, but was thinned out to about 90%. I spent almost an hour in the shower with nasty intense contractions and was getting exhausted so I decided to get out and lay down. I was checked again and was told I was at 4cm and completely thinned. At this point I was laying on my side and napping between contractions. The nurse then came back with another nurse and wanted her to check me. The second nurse said I was 5-6 and very stretchy. I think I was checked one more time after that and was maybe 7-8. They told me to let them know if I started to feel pushy. I waited a little too long and then had to try to breathe through the urge to push while waiting for the Dr. When he got there he asked me what position I wanted to be in to delivery and I told him semi-sitting on my side. They raised the head of the bed for me and I pushed out my baby boy with the next contraction. Aaron Thomas was born at 6:47 am, and weighed 7 lbs, 3.5 oz His apgars were 10, 10, and 10!! He nursed in the delivery room before we went to our room. I had no stitches and couldn't have planned the whole thing better.
Did I mention how much I love my small rural hospital? Not once did the nurses even offer me any pain meds. In fact they kept encouraging me and telling me how great I was doing. Other than the standard 20 minute monitoring when we first got to the hospital we were intervention free and I was able to move around as I pleased. Overall it was a fantastic experience and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again
