Well by unmedicated I mean no pain meds. On June 22nd 2004 at 2 p.m. my water broke. I knew I could sit home awhile since I wasn't contracting, but hubby was anxious and pushed me to the hospital where my midwife was waiting for me. I was only dilated 1 1/2 cm, and not contracting at all. So over the next 12 hours we tried walking, and using the breastpump to try to kickstart labor. I would get contrax while i was pumping, but they would stop completely when I was done. So finally just before 2 a.m. the midwife brought in the pit bag and asked me to allow her to start it. Being pretty tired and anxious I agree'd, and the pit was started. As soon as the i.v. was started i started walking the halls again, I barely got down the first hall when I doubled over with the first contraction, and then another right on top of it, and another........and so on. I slowly but surely made it back to my room, at that time it was about 2:20 and she checked me again, I was at 4 cm. Didn't understand how that was possible with how much pain I was in! But she stayed there with me, rubbed my back and put cold washclothes on my forehead. At 2:30 I told her I had the urge to push and of course i got the "your crazy" look lol. So she went to check me and didn't even get her fingers near when she said "reach down and feel your baby's head!" Then I told her she was crazy lol but sure enough I felt and there was his head!!! One little 'grunt' push later he was out, at 2:32 a.m. I had some abrasions but no tearing at all, i had her put some icepacks down there for a few minutes while I nursed Zachary for the first time. About an hour later I took a shower and dh and I went for a short walk outside. I felt great, and it was by far the best birthing experience ever.
Zachary Connor arrived in this world at 2:32 am. on June 23rd 2004 weighing 6 lbs 10 oz. 18 inches long (born at 38 weeks exactly).
