At about 6 weeks I had HCG levels done that showed they were increasing but not doubling quickly enough. I also had an ultrasound that showed only a gestational and yolk sac. My progesterone levels were also low at 8. I asked for progesterone cream (Prochieve) in case the baby was viable and started using it.
I went back at around 7 weeks and we saw a tiny baby with a heartbeat of 120 bpm.
10 days later (8 weeks) I had a tiny bit of brown spotting and went in for another ultrasound. The ultrasound showed the baby had not grown (and in fact it looked even smaller to me) and baby's heart was no longer beating.
I had another ultrasound scheduled for that Thursday (for my own peace of mind) and a D&C scheduled for Friday.
I started having more bleeding right after the exam, about like the very beginning of a period.
Two days later on September 19, I woke up at 8:00 with some cramping. I called into work to tell them I was not coming in. I called Dh and told him I was concerned that I might miscarry that day and he said he was going to a meeting and would call me back at 9:30 to check on me.
The cramping got progessivly worse and I started bleeding more. I took some Advil but I think by the time I took it, it was too late for it to kick in. It was the worst pain I have ever been in. It felt like period cramps times 10. I went back and forth between trying to read online, sitting on the toilet and rocking on my glider. It felt like there should have been something I could do to relieve the pain but there was not. I was walking to the toilet at about 10:30 and felt something slide out onto my pad. I went to the bathroom and saw I had passed some tissue. There was a golf ball sized clump of tissue that I think was the uterine lining and something connected to it that could have been the baby but it was hard to tell because it was so bloody and fragile. I cleaned myself up a little and put all the tissues in a ziploc to take to the doctor.
I felt much better afterwards as far as pain. I called my Dh and he said the meeting had run very late and I told him what had happened and that I didn't think I had lost too much blood and was okay.
I went to the doctor's office to give them the tissues and they did an ultrasound and saw only some blood there, so I got to cancel the D&C.
I would say I was glad it happened naturally, although it was painful. The pain lasted a couple of hours for me. I did not lose tons of blood...more than a normal period but not enough that I ever felt I was in danger. If I had to do it over again I would take some sort of pain relief meds when I first starting having cramps. I would rather go through what I went through than having a D&C. Also I did not have to feel like the baby was "taken" from me.
I think my bleeding has stopped now. I bled for a week after the miscarriage, and most of it was not heavy bleeding.
