Open the picture you want to edit...



I always make a duplicate copy of the original picture...



Lasso your subject, and create a new layer - don't feather it or else the black & white underneath will show up where it should be color.



Go back to your duplicate copy and choose Image>Adjustments>Desaturate (or hit shift + control + U)



If it happens that you messed up with your lasso, and there is now a chunk that is black and white when it should be colored, select your duplicate layer and carefully erase the black and white, this will reveal the color underneath, in your original copy. The of course, you can play around with your levels to make it look like you want it to.

i tried that on my image editor (microsoft digital image pro) but it doesn't look quite the same...sucks...
i want PS so bad...

You can also replace color once you have the selection made of the background.
