I need y'alls help, I am trying to turn around my families diet into something healthier for us. Not just to lose weight (although my Dh needs it lol) but just because I want us to be healthy, I am tired of processed junk and want a natural whole foods diet and it's benefits.
The problem is that all the information out there is just so overwhelming! I've looked into the paleo diet, but I am not sure if I can give up dairy and grains (plus I'm not a 100% sold on the idea that grains always equal bad for you). I love to cook, so cooking for scratch isn't a problem (it's actually preferred) I just need help!
Can y'all give me some tried and true recipes that you love? What do you enjoy, what do you avoid (and why), what are some things you didn't think you would like but do. Pretty much anything!
we do the paleo diet. Giving up grains & dairy isn't so bad . . . especially once you've been off them for a while, you try adding them back in and get to see exactly what they were doing to you. Grains for me = constipation, congestion, nausea, weight gain. Processed sugar = joint pain. LOL, I definitely don't miss ANY of that!! Dairy I don't miss . . . even the taste for me now is bleh. last time I ate dairy ice cream after a few bites I didn't even want it, it just didn't taste good anymore.Dairy + me = stinky, Kiddo cannot have nightshade foods, they give him seizures. I gave them up for him, and am afraid to try them again since I was able to find out what grain and dairy do to me now and I have NO desire to go back there!!
It's nice now if I get a cold, I'm not all stuffed up. It's also nice not having joint pain that I *thought* was just from cold weather. it's ALL from the foods we eat! Just a matter of finding what works for you and what doesn't.
Your tastes do change!! Things I thought I wouldn't like - rutabagas, turnips, eating more meat . . . I love fresh fruit and veggies so that wasn't an issue. But once you find some good recipes it's super easy.
My favorite recipe is rutabaga fries - slice like fries, coat in italian dressing (I have a homemade recipe I use since kiddo can't have paprika), sprinkle on a little extra oregano, thyme, marjoram, garlic, mix again, and then add some sea salt on top. Bake 1/2 hr @ 350F, stir, and then 10 more min (or longer depending on how much you are making) @ 450F - until done as you like.
I actually thought about you when I was looking into the paleo diet, I remembered you had mentioned what it had done for Kaiden and his seizures. I am really excited about giving up processed sugars, it's the dairy and grains that I'm not so sure about.
I have actually never tried rutabaga, but I will definitely try that recipe. I am willing to try anything at this point!
My beliefs are that we should eat as many raw greens, vegetables and fruits as possible.
Fresh meat (hunt/local/organic)
Raw dairy (unpasteurized, unprocessed - straight from the cow/goat)
*with raw dairy, it's very easy to make your own butter, cream, cheese etc...
Grains... I can't get away from them. I love bread - LOVE IT - but I want it to be organic, unprocessed etc...and I want to try other flours as well. There's coconut flour and tapioca flour... and a whole bunch. It's not just wheat.
If I'm gonna eat it, I'm going to either grow it, kill it or bake it myself. That's my new way of thinking when it comes to food
