My youngest is 7 years old and for the last year he is having trouble making it to the bathroom ontime. I don't understand what the problem is. He's been potty trained for years. He has a lot of urinary urgency so when he finally knows he has to go...he has to go NOW.....but the last year he's been poopin in his underwear too. It's a lot, not just like a wiping problem. I don't know what to say or do for him. He gets so busy he just doesn't go until it's too late. My husband suggested making him wash them out himself. I don't know whether this is something he should be punished for or whether I should seek professional help. I don't know. Anyone? I'm gonna post this on a couple other boards too. Thanks.

Have you talked with his Doctor about it? If not, I would have him checked out before doing anything else.

Hi Tammy, thanks for the reply. I haven't spoken to the doctor about it yet, Ian is a very shy kid...he doesn't like talking and I was afraid taking him to the doctor might traumatize him. Does that sound crazy? I mean, he's a young boy and he's just getting where he wants privacy to change and stuff...I don't want to betray his problem to strangers. We recently moved to Tx so he doesn't have a pediatrician yet. Anyone we go to see will be a new person to him. Just trying to handle it delicately.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it!

I think you maybe need to call the dr. and talk to him about it (that way you don't have to actually "take" him, you can just tell a doc what's going on) i think at his age pooping in his pants MAY mean he has a bowel problem or something along those lines.
you said you recently moved to TX - do you move alot? could it just be stress related to moving, starting a new school, etc.....?

keep us posted on how he does

My cousins son had a problem a while back, and it was actually a back up in his tract. It was keeping him from knowing when he had to go until it was too late. They had to actually go in and clean him out, he had alot of dried poo up there that was causing him problems. You should definately talk to a doctor, it may be nothing or it may be serious, you just should know sooner than later.

I agree you need talk to a dr. you can talk to the dr. first to have them be gentle. You never know, he may feel more comfortable talking to them than you think.

If there is a problem, you need to know now.

my brother was potty trained at about 3, then out of nowhere it seemed, he started pooping in his pants, actually just stopped about a year or two ago, he is now 15 my mother made him wash out his own underwear. that didnt work he just started to throw them out, finally she did take him to a dr. he couldnt find anything wrong, he sent him to a psycholigist(sp?) it turned out to be an issue he had bottled up, basically stress.
