My neighbor (I'm in a duplex) is a 70 something year old man. He lives all by himself. He has two sons. One in Cali that never calls him and one that lives right down the street that hardly ever calls or comes over (it has a lot to do with his sons wife.... dont know the whole story.) But hes a nice man, and hes lonely so we have him over a lot to visit with us. He loves my dog, bird and daughter to death and really enjoys chatting with me.

Well the summer before we moved in here, he lost his dog. He'd had her for a long time and she was a great dog! He wanted another, but didn't think he could handle a dog anymore. So he got a cat the summer after we got here. Hes had Annie (the cat) for the last three years. Shes been and indoor\outdoor cat, but she never leaves the property or goes near the road. Shes very shy and wont go to people. She wouldn't let me touch her unless Mike was outside with us. I was THE only other person she would let touch her tho.

Well this morning I was in the car getting ready to pull out to go grocery shopping. I happened to look up by the road and there was a dead cat laying there. My heart immediately jumped to my throat. I ran over there and sure enough, it was Annie. But part of me was hoping and praying it was just a cat that looked like her. I came back and turned off my car and knocked on Mikes door. He said no, Annie was not in the house. So I told him what had happened. I feel SO horrible! He went out and got her and said he would bury her in the yard. It was SO hard not to cry when I told him.

I did my shopping and after I got everything put away I went over to check on him. He was crying. I started crying too. I gave him a hug and invited him to gymnastics tonight and told him that he can come over and hang out with us if he wants to try to take his mind off things or if he needs anything at all just to ask. I think I'm going to buy some flowers to put on her grave for him. I wish I could do more. But I dont think theres much more I can do than what I have already.

That's so sad, and you're such a great neighbor for looking after him like that. Goodness knows when people get old a lot of people forget about them.

That is awful! Poor man, it seems that kitty is all he had . There is a website called Rainbow Bridge and has a very comforting poem dealing with the loss of a pet. - maybe you could print it out and give it to him.

Thanks you guys. I do know about the rainbow bridge thing Shan. I'm not sure if that would help him tho. Hes the type of guy who.. well he cut of his finger while mowing his lawn and was just like "Oh. Look at that." Luckily my landlords were here and made him go to the hospital.

Thats why the fact that he was crying is a HUGE thing. The guy was in Vietnam. Hes been thru a lot and doesn't let his feelings out like that yk. So I know hes really upset and I just wish I could do more.

OK, so I am crying! That is so sad!

I know that getting him another cat doesn't bring her back but do you think maybe finding a kitten would help him. Make him love again?

I am the type of person that always needs to have something to take care of. I have 2 cats and a dog. We had ferrets too but recently gave them to my uncle becaus eone would not stop biting and I could not have her bite Christopher and we couldn't just get rid of one. So off to my uncles house they went and have an awesome life there.

But any who... Maybe you can look in the paper and see if anyone is giving away free kittens. I bet a little kitten would warm his heart!

You being a great neighbor is probably helping the most! You are awesome!!!

You are such a great neighbor and friend to that man! I commend you for that! And that is so sad what happened. Like someone else said, maybe a free kitty would do the trick, I know he'll still be sad but it can help to take his mind off it.

I haven't asked him if he is going to get another cat. I can tell how torn up he is about Annie and I was the same way when I lost my cat last year. It hurt so much when people asked me if I was going to get another. I still haven't been able to bring myself to get another and its been close to 2 years since she died.

I HAVE however asked a friend (her sister in laws cat had some kittens) if her SIL still had the kittens, which she doesn't anymore, but shes going to keep her eye out. So I thought I'll just keep my eye out for another kitten and if I see anything THEN I will let him know.

I can just imagine how hard its going to be. He would tell me how Annie would wake him at four am every morning. And just routine stuff for taking care of an animal, not doing that anymore makes it that much harder when you loose a pet. Its such a strange feeling when you've been doing something everyday for 3 years and all of a sudden one day thats ripped out of your life.
