A doula is a person who helps you during labor... They help you stay focused and encourage you throughout.. Generally someone who uses a doula plans on an unmedicated childbirth, and that sometimes needs encouragement..

Its a professional labor coach I guess you could say.. Instead of just getting a crash lamaze course that say a friend or spouse or partner would get with you.. They are more experienced.
Some hospitals offer them, but from what I understand, you have to interview and hire your own...

I believe Lala on the Labor and Delivery board is a professional Doula (I could be wrong but I could swear I read about it). You might want to contact her.....she's extremely knowledgable.

<span style="font-family:Georgia">I'm new, saw this thread and wanted to jump in and say hi. My name is LeAnne, I'm a certified doula through DONA International. I'm not sure about other areas but here it seems like we get about 50/50 as far as clients hiring us who plan to use pain medication or clients who hire us who are planning an unmedicated birth. We've even had some hire us who were planning a cesarean.

We support each mother/family individually with whatever their choices are. We educate, listen, provide information, help with different comfort techniques but mostly like Becky said, we encourage.

Most doulas are trained through an organization or have trained through experience, certified doulas are required to continue their education to re-certify every 3 years. There are also postpartum doulas to help new moms adjust to all of the changes during the babymoon

I am a doula as well. I think doulas are a must for first time moms!

We used a doula for our third child which was a homebirth. Well worth the price paid, even though it was our third.
