Nick Lachey Seeks the Right to Request Spousal Support
February 20, 2006
NICK LACHEY filed papers in L.A. Superior Court Friday asking for the right to request spousal support from JESSICA SIMPSON in response to her divorce petition. Property assets and obligations have not been established yet in the proceedings.
Over the weekend, Hollywood reacted to the news. "I don't really agree with that because I think it's a cop-out," Oscar winner JAMIE FOXX told ET. "You got to get up and do your own thing."
QUEEN LATIFAH echoes the sentiment. "The truth is none of us know what's really going on in that relationship or what happened," she says. "We've just been reading it in the papers and looking at it on your show like everybody else," she says. "I just hope they work it out."
Along with spousal support, Nick says he also wants back from Jessica miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects he gave her throughout their three-year marriage. The couple did not sign a pre-nup and California law states that Nick could be entitled to half of Jessica's earnings, which was a reportedly $35 million just last year.
Jessica filed for divorce from Nick in mid-December, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. In her papers, Jessica is seeking to terminate the court's ability to award spousal support to Nick, and wants to restore her name back to "Jessica Simpson" from her legal married name of Jessica Simpson Lachey.
The popular "Newlyweds" fought off break-up rumors for nearly a year, then eventually announced their split last November with the following official statement:
"After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways," the couple said. "This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."
The couple married in Austin, TX, in front of 350 guests in an hour-long Baptist ceremony. Jessica wore a strapless VERA WANG gown and Nick sang "My Everything," a song he wrote just for his bride.
