I really don't know how I graduated high school. The last year I was absent more than I was there, but because my mom had passed away the year before and I was pretty much on my own, the school was very very lenient. I wish they hadn't been though.
If my child skipped class there would be a punishment. There is no reason for it.
I never skipped class in highschool, but did in College.
In highschool I actually managed to rig my schedule really nice. As long as you were on track for having all the requirement to graduate, you could set up your schedule to have a free period (study period? lol) and for 10th and 11th grade I managed to get a 1st period "study" period. hehe. So I got to come in later.
In my senior year I had room enough to have TWO study periods and I had one in 1st period and one in 7th so I had super-short days. I loved it. haha.
I never had homework either because I skipped lunch every day and just got it all done in the library.
In college there were times when I knew exactly what was going to be happening in class and I knew I didn't need to be there. I also had a lot of "lab" classes where the entire period was just so you could work. I went to a very VERY intensive tech school for my associates degree and there were times when I was up till 4am getting something done for a class during the afternoon the next day. So I'd skip my 9am class
I was paying for it and as long as I knew I was on track for getting a good grade, I figured it was fine.
uhoh! I hate to admit im the blacksheep here but in highschool i was the queen of skipping and ms bad influence becauseof course who wants to skip alone? ###### yonkers ny public schools.. my mom barely knew anything. She kicked my butt when i did but that didnt help. As im older now i realize it mighthave been because of my severe anxiety disorder and i was terrified of school and had panic attacks constantly but of course i didnt want anyone to know that so i was just tryin to play it off like "im too cool for school" lol As soon as they were gonna leave me back i dropped out n did home schooling and graduated with a 4.0 and honors! (PCDI)
If your/my kid has a problem with school skipping id first try to find out if theres an underlying issue that needs to be addressed (ie the anxiety that i had and still suffer from terribly) etc. Otherwise yes punishment and privelage taking is definitely in order. Always keep on top of things with teachers and attendence darn teenagers are sneaky little critters lol
