My husband and I went back "home" to visit his family. His aunt has leukemia again, we just found out. We didn't see her last year when she was going through her treatment because the hospital she was in was just too far. So we went to see her this time before she goes back in. Anyway, we get to in-law's house and I'm sitting at the kitchen table trying to have a decent conversation with FIL. He's old and hard to talk to. Out of nowhere he starts asking me all kinds of personal health questions. Yes, I am overweight, but that doesn't give him the right to ask these things. I just tried to ignore it, and of course I didn't answer him. Then he says he thinks gastric bypass surgery would be a "good idea" for me!!! My jaw hit the table, I was soooo mad and offended! Then he goes on to tell me exactly how they do it and how much it would cost me. I got up and walked outside.

Would that make you mad if your FIL suggested gastric bypass surgery to you? Or am I over-reacting?

Uh yeah I would be mad! That is so rude! That is a personal decision, and IMO, no one, except your dr. and maybe your spouse (but even that one is iffy), has the right to suggest that to you. I think it's almost always rude to bring up losing weight to someone, even in reference to yourself. I'm sorry that he said that. Maybe he needs to go to sensitivity training, I'd research how much that would cost him!

I can't stand him! If I actually wanted to spend a dime on him, I might would consider sending him so sensitivity training, LOL! At least I don't have to deal with him very often anymore.

I'd just find out how much and then I'd be like, "After our discussion last time I saw you about gastric bypass surgery, I did some research of my own and found out it would only cost you $X.xx to attend a sensitivity training seminar. I think that it might be really good for you!" LOL that would make him think.
