All I can recommend is to try to "take it back." Sit down with him, remind him of what you said (so he knows exactly what you're talking about) and try to counter it. Something like "Well, I had a bad day. I think your grandparents are good people. We all love you and we all can get along, so don't worry about it. Sometimes people say things that don't come out right, and I did. I'm sorry about it."

I don't know what to say about your DH--asking a child to keep secrets from their parent is wrong. My mother used to always do that to me (Don't tell your dad I did this--if you tell him I bought you this, I'll take it back, etc. etc. etc.) and I HATED it.
