I did the stupidest thing yesterday!!!

So DSS will be 10 at the end of the month. His jerk grandparents are coming, as is his mother and maybe his jerk uncle.

Anyway. I decided yesterday on the spur of the moment to tell him that his grandparents don't like me. I thought that he should know in case they are weird @ his party. Also, when DH and I picked DSS up from his grandparents a few weeks ago, Ididn't go inside, and I didn't want DSS to think I was mad at him or anything. I also figured that a 10 year old might pick up on something weird and didn't want him to think it was related to him at all.

So clearly Irealized this was a BAD idea for several reasons. But I can't take it back. I just told him that I shouldn't have told him, but that I thought he should know just so he didn't ever think anyone was mad @ him if the adults were being weird. But DH will so not be amused if he finds out! I told DSS not to tell.

Any suggestions? Anyone else do anything similarly dumb? No chastising, please, I know it was dumb. I'm hormonal, what can I say.

All I can recommend is to try to "take it back." Sit down with him, remind him of what you said (so he knows exactly what you're talking about) and try to counter it. Something like "Well, I had a bad day. I think your grandparents are good people. We all love you and we all can get along, so don't worry about it. Sometimes people say things that don't come out right, and I did. I'm sorry about it."

I don't know what to say about your DH--asking a child to keep secrets from their parent is wrong. My mother used to always do that to me (Don't tell your dad I did this--if you tell him I bought you this, I'll take it back, etc. etc. etc.) and I HATED it.

i'm thinking i'm safe . . . cause i told him that day that his grandparents were coming for his bday, and he'd completely forgotten a few days later . . . i think i'll use what you said if i get an indication he remembers it . . .
