What are the long term side affects after you have your thyroid out?

My hair is falling out like crazy...I usually have that 4 months after I have a baby and it's only been 4 weeks, so I assume that it's from my thyroid being out? I'm also super cold all the time...Not a normal cold, i'm cold to my bones to the point where it almost hurts...On a good note, I think i'm losing weight, and i'm not tired all the time...I feel so much better, better than i've ever felt in years (physically that is)...I was just wondering if those were normal side affects and if I should expect or look for anything else...I'm also on 150mg of synthroid, not sure if that's high or not...I was on 125 and they upped it...I am almost due for another blood test.

Those could definitely be side effects of your having no thyroid. It's funny you mention that you think you are losing weight & have a lot more energy b/c those are hyper symptoms, not hypo symptoms.

As far as your hair falling out... mine was too while I was on Synthroid only & I found that it was my free T3 was low so once we added some T3 to the mix my hair quit falling out.

Almost forgot... constipation is one that you may experience/expect.

GL & HTHs!

is it possible to go hyper after you have your thyroid out? If your medication is high enough? I should be getting another blood test soon...I just don't want to go bald! BTDT...My hair didn't fall out when I was on 75mg before my surgery.

Oh yes definitely! Actually I'm on the hyper side myself just b/c of the amt of medication I take. Your thyroid though produces both T4 & T3 so considering you don't have a thyroid anymore I'd def see what your Free T3 looks like.

I do hope you get it figured out soon!

Ditto!! Also keep in mind that you can lose hair up to 6mos PP. My hair finally stopped falling out when Oliver was 5mos old.

yeah I usually lose alot of hair PP, but it doesn't start till 4 months PP (almost on the dot after every baby), and it's only been a month since I had my baby...It's been 6 weeks now since my surgery, and i'd say in the last week and a half to 2 weeks i've been noticing things that I think are from having my thyroid taken out...I'm not sure if it's normal for the side affects to take a while to start? The only thing I noticed maybe 2 weeks after my surgery is that I wasn't tired constantly.
