How long do you think you were hyper/hypo before being dx? Did you know you were before being dx? If so, how did you know/suspect you were? If not, did your dx explain a few things that you noticed were going on?
I think I was hypo years before being diagnosed. I had no idea that I was though. I went in because of infertility and that's when they told me. They did a blood test. I did have dye inserted in my tube to see if my tube was clear before the test results (I only have 1 tube). Then when they saw my TSH was 38 they knew it was from that. I had all the symptoms though. I would have like 3 layers of clothes on in the summer (now remember, I live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We get temperatures of over 120F in the summer). I gained tons of weight, slept alot, hair falling out, dry skin, messed up periods, heart palpatations, my fingernails were always purple (I thought that was cause I was always cold), cold all the time, panic attacks and I'm sure more things but have forgotten. I was miserable to be honest.
It explained everything and to be honest, I was quite mad that no one paid more attention to me. I told several doctors and they just blew me off thinking I was just making it all up. They still do it to me, but at least I have knowledge on my side. Thank God for the internet!!
Krista, actually your story is a lot like mine! I know I was hypo at least a yr before being dx & once I was dx I looked back at a few things & understood. Several months before being dx (about 6 I believe) I started working out b/c I was gaining so much weight but I couldn't lose any weight hardly. I lost maybe a pound a month so eventually decided that if I'm gonna be fat, at least I'm gonna be happy & quit the gym... I HATE working out but I do it b/c I gotta if I want to lose this weight.
Anyway, I actually was dx through infertility b/w... that's how I found out & actually I never suspected hypo until a few months before being tested when I started charting & found out my BBTs were low & according to TCOYF, low BBTs could be a sign of hypo... so I pushed for b/w which the dr actually said typically comes back normal but nope, not for me... TSH was 40-something.
Though I didn't have very many symptoms... slept a lot, cold all the time, hair falling out, weight gain/inability to lose weight... that's it.
That's enough to make you miserable. I thought I was just lazy cause I was so tired all the time. My husband is great though. I have to really pat him on the back cause he always tells me I'm not lazy. He says that when I'm normal that I do what is normal, but it's just my thyroid messing me up. He has a friend that has hypo and that really helps. His friend is always telling him to be nice to me cause he knows I'm suffering . It's nice to be honest. Not that my husband wasn't nice before but it gave him a different perspective. It's the same friend that got me the appointment with the specialist. Great guy in my book !!
