Hello everyone. I hope you don't mind my posting here, but I recently found out something about my thyroid and I don't know what to do or what I should expect:

My doc found a nodule on my thyroid and confirmed with an ultrasound. His nurse called today and said that he wants to refer me to an Endocrinologist (my labs suggest slight hyperthyroid, even though I'm having no symptoms. I don't know my numbers, though.), He also wants me to have a thyroid scan. I told the nurse that I'm breastfeeding; I'm aware that I can't BF for a certain amount of time after having the test. I'm wondering if it is absolutely necessary to have this scan done and if I should push my doctor for an alternative. I am at the point in BFing where I make JUST enough for baby and not a lot of "extra." Pumping and building up a supply will likely be difficult for me. I really don't want to have to supplement, but obviously will if I have no choice. Also, I don't know in the end what to expect. Surgery? Will I have to go under anesthesia? Is this something that can wait or no? What will the endo do for me? Thanks for any help you can give!

I honestly don't know. I'm assuming they are trying to rule out thyroid cancer but am not even sure about that. Sorry I'm no help. I hope someone else can jump in & help you.

is there a reason why they won't biopsy it first before a scan?

Update: My doctor decided to just go ahead and have the fine needle biopsy done. I'm having it done tomorrow morning. I'm just so ready to know what the plan is. I was diagnosed with a cornea bulging disorder (kerataconus) this past summer while I was pregnant. I'm floored to know that this is related to the hyperthyroidism that I have. Will meds slow the progression of this -does anyone know? I am assuming that this condition is similar to Graves Opthalmalogy. Thanks for your replies!

good luck with the biopsy, I've had a cyst on my left side for four years, but it isn't over 1cm, and it hasn't grown, they usually don't remove them until 1cm, but I guess it'll depend on what your biopsy shows ((hugs))

Marie! Small world! Thanks!

Thanks, MeganMomof5!

I am going to an endocrinologist today. The ENT wouldn't do the biopsy -said my hyper needed to get under control first. Originally, I wasn't going to be able to get into an endo until 4/30, but I found another doctor who could see me today!

An uptake and scan will tell if the nodule(s) is hot or cold. Hot is good;cold has a higher chance of being cancerous. I did this 4 years ago and it was super easy. I went to the hospital got the iodine pill and went home. Then went back in the morning for the scan. It consisted of laying on a narrow table and a machine revolves around and takes pictures of your thyroid. My dr. said the uptake and scan is usually the first step and then a fna biopsy (which also wasn't really that bad either, the worst part is the waiting for the answer after it's done). The scan can also tell if it's Graves if I remember correctly.

I had mild hyperthyroidism that was discovered after routine bloodwork and then went through all these steps....I took methimazole (tapazole) for a while. My endo. said the anti thyroid drugs aren't really ones you want to take for extended amount of times. My levels were good on the meds but eventually (last September) I had to do radioactive iodine. Which wasn't that bad but it sucked because I had to be isolated in the basement for 3 days! But now my levels are all supposedly right where my endo wants them.

Anyway long story short, the uptake and scan is a cinch.....if you have little ones they will just tell you to flush twice and wash your hands really well after you swallow the iodine pill....but it is a very very small dose of iodine....

Good luck and sorry for the short novel here

Thanks so much!

My endo appointment was Thursday -he's a Thyroid specialist and I really liked him. He said that I have a textbook case of hyperthyroidism and that there was no need to do an FNA or scan. I'm on PTU until I stop BFing and then I will have to have the iodine irradiation. I don't look forward to that. I was told the same thing, mom2nate, that I wouldn't be able to have contact with my kids for 3 days. When you had that done did you not even have contact with DH? Is it just a concern with the kids?

It's really just the little kids they are mostly concerned with. And you have to sleep alone for the first 3 nights and use disposable plates/utensils as well and immediately dispose of them in a plastic bag, tie it and throw it away. I stayed in the basement and my husband would come down for 5-10 or so minutes at a time to talk to me and bring me food and drinks. My toddler would come to the top of the stairs to talk to me (he really didn't understand it but I tried very hard to explain it to him so he kind of got it). I bought an air mattress to sleep on and I took the sheet off every morning and washed it. For the first 3 days you have to take multiple showers, I think I showered 3-4 times a day and also washed those towels etc right away too. I flushed the toilet 2-3 times for the first 2-3 days and washed my hands super well then wiped the sink down with a clorox wipe. We have a couch downstairs and I just covered it with a sheet which they didn't tell me to do but I did as a precaution ....oh and drink tons of water

It sounds pretty scary but they make it sound worse than it is...really. Most of the radio-iodine is out of your system after the first 24-48 hours and 99% of it comes out in urine so everything else is just extra precaution. I know when they gave me the papers on it and I talked with my endo and the nuclear meds doc I was rather freaked out but I really think it sounds worse than it is.

If I remember correctly I think they will probably tell you not to hug your kids or have them close to your neck for like a week or so and no kissing them for like a week or so too.....

Good luck with it....I feel so much better after it.....My heart doesn't beat out of my chest and I'm not having horrible anxiety so much any more...I feel a lot calmer inside
