Hello ladies. I have a question for you thyroid vetreans. I am 30, I have an 18month old son, and am currently about 10 weeks pregnant.

I have never had any known thyroid issues, however over last weekend I felt like there was a lump in my throuat. I complained to my husband over the weekend and then Monday it hit me, its my thyroid. ( I felt dumb, Im a nurse I felt like I should have known) I called my OB, who said I should follow with my primary first. She said she did not feel any swelling, but ordered a stat ultrasound. She called me yesterday with the results, and yes the thyroid is diffusly enlarged. There were no nodules noted. She then ordered a TSH and a Free T4.

I called to get the results today and the nurse said she was out today but had another dr. review them and they were normal. I didnt actually get the values, but I plan on it. She was going to forward all the info to my OB.

My question is, can a thyroid just be enlarged for no reason? I am tired, more so than my last pregnancy, but I am chasing a toddler around. It is almost difficult to swallow at times with the swelling. I dont think I could stand this for long. Anyone had a similar situation?

Thanks

Hello & So sorry I didn't see this sooner. Forgive me. I had an enlarged thyroid when first dx myself. I don't know if it can be enlarged & nothing wrong but I know in my situation it was b/c I was hypo & the endo said that with proper treatment the thyroid would shrink & it did. It was JUST like you described... hard to swallow. It didn't hurt really but it was uncomfortable.

I would DEF get those results b/c a lot of times they say you're normal when you're not. The new lab ranges for normal are 0.3-3.0 & a lot of dr's still go by the OLD range of 0.5-5.0. I would also get your Free T3 checked as well. GL & KUP!

I ditto Amanda! The Free T4 and free T3 is what's important. Not so much the TSH. KUP with what you find out!

Thanks ladies. Well my values are

TSH 0.76
FT4 0.61

So, she said call your OB and see what he wants to do now. I felt like I was being brushed off. So now I am just waiting to hear back from them on how we are going to proceed.

Your numbers appear more hyper than hypo so I have no idea why your thyroid might be enlarged.

I know what you mean about feeling like you're being brushed off. Thyroid issues are no fun at all!

GL & KUP on what happens next.
