I'm hypo and my levels were checked 8 weeks ago and were fine. I take .175 mcg's of Synthroid daily. Now the last few weeks I've been having MAJOR salt cravings. I crave it to the point that I'm thirsty all the time b/c I've taken in too much. Anyway my PCP checked my thyroid again on Tuesday and now she said my meds need to be decreased to .150 mcg b/c my thyroid is putting out more. But then she also said that I'll need to stay off the salt completely and let her recheck it in 6 weeks b/c the salt maybe what's making it work more.

Have you heard of this? Why would I be having such extreme salt cravings anyway?

I'd get your iron/ferritin levels checked. I've never heard salt effecting your thyroid. If you have an iodine deficiency that could be another reason you're craving salt (and also another reason you're hypo).

Never heard of it either. I was told to decrease my salt intake but due to my hypertension which is blood pressure not thyroid.

I agree with the pp on the iodine, but I'm not sure
I avoid salt for hypertension

Just the opposite. I was told to make sure I get a decent amount of iodized salt, since that's an easy way of getting iodine.

Never been told that either. Are you swollen - hands, feet? When I was taking too much I was swelling up (I forgot that) so I tried not to eat too much salt.
