Hypothyroidism Treatment- How To Monitor Your Treatment With Natural Hormone Therapy

Not sure what everyone thinks about Dr. Mercola (I personally think he is quite radical on alot of issues, but I'm pretty certain that Mary Shomon - who most of you love - references him quite alot), but basically he is saying to take the Armour TWICE a day, AFTER eating. Also, he mentions chewing the tablet before swallowing. I know some of you crush the pill and disolve it under the tongue, but what about chewing it? Thoughts? Opinions?

I dont take Armour but I take a dessicated thyroid called Erfa which is similar to what Armour was before being reformulated. I take it twice a day once in the morning and once in the early afternoon. The reason for taking it twice is because T3 is used up quickly in the body and if you take it all in the morning it will be used up and you will "crash" in the afternoon. T4 is a storage hormone that will eventually be converted to T3 so it gives you a more steady supply but when you take T3 it is used immediately.

The part about chewing is most likely due to the fact that Armour was reformulated and now uses cellulose which makes it take much longer to dissolve and absorb into the body. I personally would not chew it as dessicated thyroid tastes pretty bad. Crushing would probably be just as good.

I take the Erfa instead of Armour because it doesnt have the cellulose so it is broken down by the body more quickly and doesnt require crushing. Usually with natural thyroid you dont have to follow that rule of no eating like you do with synthyroid. I usually do anyway just to be sure but the pharmacy instructions do not say you should avoid food like synthyroid does.

I crush mine and use a spoon to stick to the back of my throat and wash it down with water....it does taste nasty! I think all thyroid meds should be crushed, but that's just my take. I however, can't take mine 2x a day since I take Metformin at dinnertime. Metformin and thyroid meds don't go well together (I posted an article about this a few weeks ago). I don't seem to have any problems in the evening with symptoms of "crashing". So, for me it works. I do recommend splitting the dose and crushing the pill, though. An even dose every 12hrs sounds right.

Very interesting, Ladies! I've decided that since my new labs will be coming up in October, I'm just going to continue taking Armour the way I always do (swallow 1 pill first thing in the morning and wait 1 hour before eating) so that the labs show an accurate reading of what I usually do. If the labs come back with my levels being off, then I think I'll probably split the pill and take twice a day. I do feel that I "crash" late afternoon pretty much every day, so maybe that will help.

I highly recommend crushing them. That may help with your afternoon crashing since there's a small issue with Armour's filler right now.
