I usse velcro. That way if it's not in the exact right place you can move it slightly without adding more holes to the wall. I use just the thick velcro foundin the sewing dept. mine have been up for months with no slipping or anything.
It's also easier to hang, no measuring. press hook and loop side to soft side. Remove backing from both while attached to eachother. Press one side against letter. repeat until you have as many pieces as you like, then stick letter to the wall. The adhesive will catch and stick onto the wall, voila perfectly placed letters.

Oh the velcro is a good idea. I have to put new letters up in the kids new nursery and we had a TIME getting my son's letter off the wall to his old room as the only thing we had on hand that would work is liquid nails...yea dont recommend that!
