I completely agree Nicole! The first one is just too bland for me. And, #2 by itself is too boring, but then I'd add fuschia, lime green, or bright blue accents to the room. I love that look!

Black toile, definitely. And I could see myself never deliberately adding color to it, beyond plushies and toys.

The first, frankly, looks too 'boy' for me, if I were having to do a gender-neutral room.

For a gender neutral, the black toile for sure. Like a pp said, you could add gender specific touches to it.

I do really like the first one though too but only for a boy.

Honestly neither are my style but I would choose Crown Craft's Waverly Black Toile if I had to pick one. The first one doesn't even resemble a baby's room to me.

They first one looks boy, and Toile says girl to me. Neither are my taste.
