I got my crib bedding set yesterday and it came with a bumper. I looked up articles on the internet about how safe they are and so far I have seen that they are not only unnecessary but also can cause suffocation. I hate to waste it (it's very pretty) so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of other ways it can be used.

Honestly, I have never had a problem with having the crib bumper in there with them.

I hope you find another use for it.

My cousin's baby is 8 months old and her bumper is still in the crib.

I'd assume as soon as the baby begins rolling over on their own to remove it from the crib.

But..as for a suggestion... Maybe you could hang it on the door or something, that way you're still using it, but it's not in the crib. Almost like a sneak peak to the baby's room.

My parents used a crib bumper for both my sister and I, till we moved onto a big girl bed at about 2. We had no problems and are fine. I researched and found this info if you are going to use a bumper...

"if you are using a bumper always be sure that the strings used to attach the bumper are no longer then six inches long."

(I'd make sure it's tied tightly to the crib as well) Or if you're worried about bumpers then get one of the mesh breathable ones.

They are not recommended at all by Health Canada so I am opting not to get a full set. I have read that some people use them on the wall as a decoration for the baby's room.

just an fyi, I have a girlfriend with a 21 month old and he won't sleep in his crib without a bumper because he gets his arm stuck in the rails and wakes himself up.

I know all the debates over bumpers, but they do have a purpose or else why would we have them??

The SIDS alliance does not recommend the plush baby bumpers that come with the bedding sets, but you can use 'rebreathable' bumpers. You can get these at Babies R' Us or other large baby retailers.

I didn't post this to start a debate. I just wanted some ideas. If you want to use a bumper in your crib then by all means, go for it. Don't try to tell me that I'm wrong for believing they aren't safe.
