NPR is taking a poll based on Stephen Hawking's new book about spontaneous creation. Here's their question:

"Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to ... set the Universe going." (Excerpt via the Associated Press.)
What do you think? Could he be right? We'll keep this question open until midday Monday:"

Its on: No God Needed To Create Universe, Hawking Says; Your Thoughts? : The Two-Way : NPR (you don't need to log on or be a member or anything).

I thought it would be good to get some votes of reason on there, before the religious fanatics get wind of it and skew the results.

Here's another one.
Is physicist Stephen Hawking right that physics, not God, created the universe? | Poll | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

The website Pharyngula gathers such polls for us to rationalize.

It's very encouraging to see that as of right now, 57.8% of the votes on the NPR poll say Hawking is right, and 84.8% of the Guardian voters believe in gravity over god. However, is that just an indication that the religious are reading less? What does Fox news have to say about this? (*snicker*)

Huh, you can refresh the NPR link and vote again, they didn't bother to cookie it. It's up to 60% in favor of Hawking's ideas now. (I didn't do it!)
