So, I go to meet and spend time with my 16 year old son's new girlfriend's family, and left there wanting to SLAP her family, namely her mother and 26 year old sister.

First of all, and I do NOT intend this to mean I look down on people and judge but sometimes I am human, but this family was what one would definately call "whitetrash" or "redneck" (I can only hope beyond hope he never marries into this family) and very ignorant.

I overlooked this aspect until they got into God and religion.

So, I have a 3 year old daughter who has a chronic seizure condition and almost lost her life a couple of times over the years, and their response 'God takes people away to show he is there. And you NEVER question why!!!" W...T...F....? I then try to tell the geniuses that that's not how I look at it and believe it and they go on to try to give me fear tactics as to why I should believe. Yep Clampits are winning their case there. Then mother Clampit goes on to say that she knows that God exists (upon challenging her there) because they found Noah's Ark and something Jesus supposedly wore in his life. Of course when I ask Miss Harvard to back it up with more proof she only gets angry. Then tries to say to look at my baby I was holding and tell her there was not a God and I was like, well, it's all scientific really, sperm and egg, met, blah blah blah...

Then she just looked plain blank so I called it a night.

I am definately agnostic (not TOTALLY discounting that there may be something higher than us) but if you are going to try to persuade me, please back it up with statements that require an IQ of over say...50?

Ugh that sucks. At least you know not to engage in conversations about that with them again.

lol, Wendy. I meet so many people like that. I find it best to smile and nod. Arguing isn't going to change their mind. It's not like the light bulb will go off and suddenly they will be like "oh, you're right, religion is silly!" I just wish I had more agnostic/atheist friends that shared my views :-/.

I try to say things like "Thats a nice sentiment but I'm not religious" and then hope they have enough courtesy to realize that it's not the time to preach and drop it because they would be making me uncomfortable. Unfortunately, too few realize this and think it's okay to ***** out their religion at every chance, regardless of others' beliefs, but occasionally it works to end the preaching without any butthurtedness.

Don't you love that? They try to dis-prove science but the second you want them to prove anything in the bible they freak out and tr to make you feel like a bad person for questioning the bible! So so stupid.
