If you woke up tomorrow and realized that there IS, in fact, a higher power in the universe ...

what religion would you be?

Do you feel one type of god(s) is more likely to exist than another? Would you feel more comfortable with one certain sort of worship?

I don't need a religion! I don't wanna be part of any religion. If there was a higher power then good, but it's not the end of the world, it's not gonna change the way I live my life.

Let's see...I'd go with one that fits the following criteria:

-one which is neither sexist nor racist or prejudice in any way
-one which has a history that is not riddled with bloodshed, unnecessary war, and destruction
-one whose past is not built on the deaths of innocent children
-one that does not condemn nonbelievers to a life of torture
-one that does not constrain a woman's body or mind
-one that does not require genital mutiliation or cutting, to the male or female of our species
-one that embraces science
-one that holds logic and reason to be truly wonderful abilities of the human mind
-one that neither creates nor is partners with fanaticals

Let's face it. Not going to happen.

I agree with that as well.
I agree with a lot of Buddhist principles, but then again, true buddhism does not agree with personal gods, so in that sense, buddhism is an atheistic religion.

I agree, girlstar, I read the question as specifically relating to religions that have "god" or "gods."

No, I didn't necessarily mean personal gods. The exact phrasing was "a higher power", whether you think that would most likely be a general "universal truth", the universe itself, a personal God as in the Judeo-Christo-Islamic tradition, or multiple personal gods as in pagan religions, or even countless "spirits" as in animism.

I guess I shouldn't have mentioned god(s) in the personal sense in the second part, but that was only one of three questions. That particular question was really only intended for those of us who automatically assumed any god(s) that exist would be literal and personally involved. If you don't, feel free to ignore it and only address the other two.

Well, I was an atheist for most of my life...

I've found Buddhist beliefs are these. One of my favorite book's is Destructive emotions which uses the sciences we have today.. I love the way Buddhism embraces others, science, but most importantly doesn't view males or females as superior based on sex. I don't like to refer to myself as Buddhist because I'm just too ignorant of all the beliefs. (I think I would have to spend literally years of reading to feel comfortable with that term.) Plus I sometimes think there is something bigger.. I can't pin point it yet. I know I don't feel comfortable with any references to a god in the way our culture seems to embrace god.

Taoism. It's pretty easy going. You don't see many Taoists demanding to know whether you are saved--let alone blowing things up (since WW2 anyway).[/b]
You don't even have to believe in God to be a Taoist. It is a way of thinking and living, not a deity beliefe system. I am an athiest yet I subscribe to the Taoist principles.
