My sister had H1N1 last week. About 5 days ago, she was put on Tamiflu. Since taking it, she has become VERY anxious, nervous, and panicky. Almost paranoid. Also, depressed. She cries constantly. I can't seem to snap her out of it.

This is very unlike her. She is an extremely happy person normally and this is just so out of character.

Has anyone experienced this after taking Tamiflu? If so, how long did the side effects last?

Any input would be SO greatly appreciated. I don't know what else to do from here..

ciao nellie!

your post concerned me enough that i googled. look what i came up with:

Tamiflu Side Effects | Drugs.com

most importantly:

Quote:
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Tamiflu:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal behavior; confusion; hallucinations; mood or mental changes; reddened, blistered, peeling, or swollen skin; seizures; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; symptoms of infection (eg, fever, chills, persistent sore throat).
Quote:
Psychiatric side effects have included delirium (including symptoms such as altered level of consciousness, confusion, abnormal behavior, delusions, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety, nightmares) during postmarketing experience.
i don't want to jump to conclusions because it could be related to the flu and not the medicine but it's worth bringing it up to her doctor ASAP.

sending you (& your sister) (((HUGS)))

I would call her dr right away. It could even be an allergic reaction. We had a little girl in scoop that started acting really strange and it turned out to be an allergic reaction. I hope everything will be okay!Kup please.

Thanks everyone! I have called her doctor twice. I just spoke to him again and he said to give her 50 mg of Benadryl tonight. (She stopped taking the Tamiflu 2 days ago). He said the Benadryl should help if it was an allergic reaction. And also that Benadryl can act as an antidepressant/antianxiety medication. She is going to try that tonight and hopefully she can sleep it off.

Thanks again for all you help! Especially you Amy! THANKS!

I know I am getting to this a little late- but my DD (6) had H1N1 about a month ago (finally all the way over it now). She was also on Tamiflu and very, very sick. She was definitely a different kiddo. Since she is so young its hard to compare or see a depression like it is in someone older but ....

She cried at the drop of a hat, her eyes were "dull"- no spark and she never got up. I think a lot of it for her was just feeling so horrible and her poor body was exhausted- she could never sleep because of her cough and her whole body ached and hurt from head to toe for over a week.

With such extreme exhaustion and fatigue it is easy for depression like emotions to set in- they feel like they are never going to get better and scared of getting worse because they cant even fathom what "worse" would feel like bc they feel so terrible already.

I hope that your sister starts feeling better. We did put DD on childrens benadryl bc it was the only thing that helped her sleep a few consecutive hours. After some sleep, she definitely perked up a bit each time. I hope that your sister is the same and can get this whole horrible H1N1 behind her very soon. (((hugs)))))
