I figured I'd join on here since I'm starting to TTC and feel like I'm googling everything possible. I had a weird question, but how long before ovulation does cervical mucus become egg-white like. I'm going to get an ovulation kit for next month, but was just curious.
I also heard that if trying for a girl, it's better to try before ovulation? Is that right? I'd love either, of course, but he already has a son and I'd love to give him a daughter.
Hi there and welcome to the board! I think you'll love it here! Lots of support and advice. It's a wonderful group!
As far as your question goes, what I understand is that you usually have EWCM either the day of ovulation or sometimes a day before. CM can be a little tricky. I had EWCM twice this cycle, once the day of O and again 5 days later. I never knew that could happen until now! Lots of women find that using some combo of taking temperatures in the morning (BBT), checking you cervix and CM, and OPKs helps them to really pin point when they ovulate.
Also, I have heard that "girl" sperm are stronger and can live longer than "boy" sperm, so some say that if you have sex 2 or 3 days before you ovulate, you have a better chance at having a girl because the boy sperm can't survive in the uterus that long. It's called swaying and you can find lots of sites and forums about it on the web. Keep in mind that restricting when you have sex can effect your chances of conceiving at all, so factor that in.
CM is usually fertile for several days before you O. I say usually, because for some women they don't get fertile CM until the day of O. It really depends on your hormones and your body though.
Most women will have fertile CM several days before O because the longer you have fertile CM, the higher your chances are for conceiving. The point is to have sperm waiting for the egg when it finally drops because sperm need several hours to mature before they can fertilize the ovum. If you have sex around the time you O, you might miss your window of opportunity because the sperm aren't matured yet.
And get ovulation KITS. Plural. You're going to want to test at least once a day from like CD8 or CD10 until the day you ovulate. Make sure you test in the afternoon. I didn't even think to look up that information so when I was using my OPKs this month, I was using them in the AM and never caught my surge.
HTH!!! Gl to you and I hope your stay on this board is short n sweet.
I also wanted to ditto the remarks already posted and add that there is a website called" in gender"( I think) that will give you all the info you need on gender swaying.
My hubby would like to have a girl too as our first is a boy and after this attempt will be done. I dont care either way...I just love babies
Sometimes I get ewcm the day of or the day before O and other cycles I got ewcm a few days before O. But usually once I see it, I know my LH is surging.
On the making a girl topic, like the others have said you can check out in-gender or the group for swaying. I have looked into these as well and found so many discrepancies in it, many women on the in-gender website got the opposite of what they were ttc. It seems that many tried that shettles method and ended up with the other gender, from what I read, that method was based on them saying the female sperm are larger and slower than the male sperm ,but what they were actually seeing was sperm with their helmets still on (they were not mature) so they got deemed the females, after lots of research it appears male and female sperm actually look the same and appear to swim about the same.
There is another method that some have tried called o+12, but it requires to know the exact time of ovulation or at least really close to it so you can bd about 8 hours afterwards. And no sex for at least 7 days before that for dh, that includes any type of release for him as well. This method doesn't have a lot of girl turn out either.
After reading all of this and weighing it out, I decided I'll get what I am meant to get, as many of the swayers have proven when they get the opposite gender. It's not up to us. As much as I would love another dd, I'll pray for her and leave the work up to the big man, if she's in my future then so be it. but this swaying stuff is crazy hard to keep up with lol.
I'm also hoping for a daughter (just because I'd like a girl first!) but we're not trying any of the swaying techniques. I'm jsut going to leave that one up to the guy upstairs, you know? Good luck, and hope you have a short stay here.
