I need to have a vent session!!

So as some of you know, I am in love with postpartum/nursery nursing and I have been trying to land a job as a RN at the Women's Hospital. So a position came up in EXACTLY the spot I want AND night shifts--which is also what I want. I went to the interview today, they loved me, and want me to start ASAP. So I was thinking "great, I'll give my 2 weeks and be done!"

Nope. The Women's Hospital is connected to the regular hospital where I work now and administration is telling me I can't leave where I am until the end of August because our floor is short staffed. Ok, I NEVER signed a contract for this floor and I'm thinking they can't stop me from leaving. Am I right?? I mean so many people give their two weeks and quit to go to new hospitals. I'm wanting to work at the same hospital, just a different department and now they are blocking my transfer. Is that even fair?? It's not my fault our floor is short--there's a reason we have no staff....our management sucks.

Am I being selfish or do y'all agree? I'm really thinking I'm going to push for this transfer and if they don't let me, tell them I'll go to a new hospital. I'm so mad!!

Sorry, and thanks for listening!!

That sounds so dang unfair!! If you aren't under contract, they can't block you from transferring. I'd suggest you threaten legal action (just to scare them). Praying for you!

I agree with Joanna! How unfair and a crappy excuse to try and bully you into staying.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that!! It's my dream job and they are being so selfish. Next week I'm going to that office to tell them they can transfer me or say goodbye and lose a nurse... Because I'll go work somewhere else!

I am excited that you got the job. But they can block your transfer. I never signed a contract with the hospital I currently work for or the one before that. But if they are in a staffing crisis they can put your transfer on hold until they have someone to fill your shoes. I am sorry and it sucks. I can totally relate.

but how can they do that? I mean, what if I just left? We have a ton of hospitals I can work at...doesn't it make more sense to move me instead of losing me completely? I'm going to try to compromise and tell them I can work on my old floor some to help out, but I really want to start working in women's too..even if that means working more days a week. I actually already applied for a Women's position at another hospital in case this backfires. I just hate this!

I am sorry that the hospitals run that way but they do. I would see if they would at least let you start orienting some over in the new unit while you still work in your old unit too. I am sorry with how things are. Fingers crossed for you!!! Good luck!!!

Thank you... I'm just going to pray for the best and really try to talk to them about it. What is meant to be will happen I guess :/

This is your dream job and I would not miss the opportunity for it. They need to get on hiring someone else for your job or transfering someone else in. If they have too many day shift workers then they need to move someone from days to nights. I would talk to them and be blunt. Will the new department hold your job till August?

I wouldn't quit because then you won't have any job, let alone the one you interviewed for. I would just go up and talk to someone in that department and grovel if you have to to make a compromise. Talk to both managers on your floor and on the new floor you're going to work at.

Yes this job is exactly what I want and they aren't going to hold it until August! They want me and the manager agreed to help me talk to HR and work out a compromise where maybe I can work both for the time being. I'd be willing to work an extra night a week to help out. I am going Tuesday to talk to them... I just can't pass this up! You girls are right!
