Ladies I need help! We just decided to try (if it happens it is good if not we will just have fun) anyway, I started on Aug 17, 2005, normal period, on Sept. 2, 2005 I started again, it was darker and lighter thatn normal, it was almost black looking. It should of been time for Oing I think, does anyone know why I would do this again and if I should count it as a period? I should start tomorrow, if I go by the Aug 17 date?

Have you recently stopped taking birth control? When you say the second one was lighter, how light? Spotting light? How long did it last? Could it have been brown rather than black? As far as BD'ing goes, I would use both dates just to be sure...and like you said, you'll be having fun anyway.

well it wasnt exactly spotting, it did fill up the tampons/pads. And it was black. Started off a darker brown at first then went black, it was about 3 days, I have not taken any method of bc since february. Have had normal periods since. Do you think Ineed a dnc, i am stumpped as to why it was so dark? Kinda has me worried.

Did you notice any indications that you were pregnant - is that why you think you might need a d&c? If that's a possibility, you need to go to your doctor and find out. I hope everything is ok.

Well first of all, black or dark brown is typically old blood/tissue.

If you recently came off of B/C that might explain it.

Also - chances are it wasnt a "period" per se - it was probably the extra lining from your uterus shedding but not necessarily a result of the rise of hormones that typically lead to menstruation.

I have never heard of a woman having a 'routine' d&c. Here are the reasons why a woman who didn't miscarry recently might have a d&c:

D&C is also done in the presence of:
• Any abnormal or unexpected bleeding from the vagina in a woman who is not
pregnant.
• Polyps–generally harmless growths that can occur in the cervix or uterus–that can cause abnormal bleeding. A D&C procedure is usually used to remove polyps.
• Fibroid tumors–generally noncancerous–that usually cause heavy periods. D&C can identify and sometimes remove small tumors, although generally a more extensive operation is required.
• Endometrial hyperplasia–a condition that occurs when the uterine lining is too
thick. D&C can diagnose the condition.
• Endometrial cancer can cause abnormal bleeding, usually in the form of bleeding
after menopause. A D&C will help make the diagnosis, but more extensive surgery
is required to treat the cancer.

As far as the first one (abnormal bleeding), I would think you would have to have a history of this in order to warrant getting a d&c.

edited for typos again - see how tired I am today!

The American College of Surgeons defines it as A minor surgical procedure in which the surgeon dilates the woman's cervix, and then inserts a thin instrument to scrape the uterine wall.

I have had it before, and my dr attributes it to the endometriosis (which has been confirmed through laproscopy).

When I say extra lining - by that I mean when you have a normal period, your body is essentially shedding the lining of your uterus that your body builds up each month in preperation for implantation/pregnancy.

However, sometimes your body isnt able to shed all of it. Some may remain. Usually, over time, this "old" blood turns black/dark brown. "Fresh" blood is red, as it gets older, it darkens in color.

Dilation and curettage - D&C

Reviewed by Dr Philip Owen, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist

Curettage of the uterus (womb) is the scraping of the lining of the uterus (the endometrium). The procedure is commonly known as dilation and curettage or D&C.
When is D&C carried out?
There are two main reasons for performing a D&C:
an evacuation D&C is performed in a recently pregnant woman to remove tissue remaining in the womb.
a gynaecological D&C is part of the investigation of a woman who is experiencing heavy or irregular periods or vaginal bleeding after the menopause.
