It all started on Tuesday, November 14th when I went to my routine midwife appointment. I was 35 weeks 6 days. All went well at my appointment. Before I left I told my midwife that I thought that I had lost some of my mucus plug earlier that day. She said she hadn’t planned on checking me but she would because I thought I lost part of my plug. When she examined me, I was 1cm but my cervix was still thick. Around 3 hours later at 6:00 PM I started having the bloody show. About 2 hours (8:00 PM) after that my water broke. I was in the bathroom and I felt and trickle of fluid. I told my mother and she told me to call my doctor. I called the doctor’s office and left a message and one of the midwives called me back and told me to go to the hospital. I immediately packed a bag and called my boyfriend and told him that I was going to the hospital. We then left to pick up my grandmother. By that time, it was after 9:00 PM when I got to the hospital. After talking with the receptionist to make sure that my information was correct I was sent to triage. In triage, I was hooked up to monitors to monitor Elijah’s heart rate and mine also. They then said that they were going to admit me since I had Group B Strep and they started my antibiotics.
Once I got to my room, I did crossword puzzles and listened to music until everyone left. Then I tried to get a little sleep but I started to have a few contractions. My midwife came in and said that I was only about 2cm and that they would start Pitocin at 4:30 AM. Well, I didn’t get Pitocin until 7:00 AM due to my midwife being busy. I was on Pitocin from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM when I told them to turn it off. I wasn’t feeling well and had already thrown up once. At that point I was at 4cm. By 11:00 AM I was 6cm. Not too long after, I felt the need to go to the bathroom. My mother-in-law and aunt helped me to the bathroom and while I was there I felt the need to push. During that time I was having double contractions that were coming back-to-back and I couldn’t get off the toilet. At that time, a nurse came in and helped me up because I told her that I needed to push. By the time I got out of the bathroom, 2 other nurses were in the room. They told me I couldn’t need to push because they had just checked me before I went to the bathroom. I told them that I needed to push. They checked me and the head was right there. They told me to wait until the midwife got to the room. I told them that I couldn’t wait and I started to push. By the time that the head was coming out and the nurses were trying to get everything set up my midwife walked in and in 3 pushes Mr. Elijah Quinn was here! He arrived on November 15, 2006 at 12:52 PM and was 5lbs 8oz, 18.5in long. He was born at exactly 36 weeks and the only problem that he had was keeping his temperature up. Labor and delivery was amazing and I would do it 1000 times over again. I had a wonderful natural birth and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
