Joshua Logan entered this world on August 13th, 2007 at 3:34am. He weighed 3 pounds 14 ounces and was 17 inches long. He was born two months premature.
I started having contractions on Monday, August 6th and they continued to Tuesday, August 7th. I honestly thought they were Braxton Hicks because I was only 32 weeks. I went to the doctor on the 7th for a basic checkup and mentioned the contractions I had been having. My doctor assumed they were Braxton Hicks as well but decided to check me anyway. He discovered I was 1cm dilated and 75% effaced. We were both so shocked. He sent me off to L&D to be admitted and off I went.
The hospital staff hooked me up to a bunch of monitors and stuck me with an IV. It took them 6 times and 3 different locations before the IV took. Very, very annoying. I was having contractions every 2-3 minutes according to the monitors. I ended up dilating to 4cm and 85% effaced. The doctors pumped me full of Magnesium Sulfate, antibiotics, steroids, and fluids. It was a miserable experience. I felt terrible and just wanted to die. I ended up laboring for 6 days. I had contractions all throughout the day but did not progress further than 4cm and 85% effaced.
Sunday, August 12th came around and I started having strange abdominal pains. The contraction monitors were not picking up anything so the nurses associated it with bladder spasms. They continued and just got worse. At 3:00am on Monday, August 13th I could not take it anymore. I was screaming in pain and begged the nurse to check me. I ended up being 5cm dilated and 100% effaced. I was in hard active labor and Joshua was coming. The nurses quickly wheeled me off to a delivery room and called the doctor. My Mom called John and told him to get there as soon as possible. By the time I got into the delivery room, maybe 5 minutes later, I was fully dilated and ready to push. I was screaming in pain from the contractions. They were coming so fast and getting more intense. The doctor came in and told me I needed to start pushing with my next contraction. So I did and failed miserably. I had no idea how to push. They explained it to me better and so through my screaming and crying -- I pushed and pushed. I did a total of 12 pushes to get Joshua out. In the meantime John, my Fiance, passed out. All the nurses and even the doctor went "UH OH" when he went down. Poor guy! Joshua came out so fast, but it was so painful. Not having drugs sucked!!! I tore only a little though. Thank God!
