So I haven't had my first OB appt yet. Last night I started spotting and freaked out. I called the doctor and they couldn't squeeze me in and told me to go to the ER. I go. They do blood work and an ultrasound. The ultra sound tech said I show 5 weeks 2 days. And not to worry that it could just be too soon to see a heartbeat. Yet the doctor comes in and says that my HCG levels were high enough that we should see a heartbeat. So because we don't that I will either miscarry or its ectopic. And that I should have my hcg levels checked again in two days. Does that sound right?? Everything I read said heartbeats can show as late as seven weeks even with high hcg levels. The ultrasound tech even said she could see the sac and it looked ok. The spotting only lasted for a few hours last night and has been completely gone all day today.

i wouldnt be concerned about it.. the with factor of HCG being a ballpark guess.. the numbers are not always an exact..... and also the factor of the u/s machine etc.. i dont think we saw my 2nd son's HB until 6 weeks and some days and at that time the HCG was over 7500

With my last son, my levels were high enough (over 5000) that we 'should' have seen the hb at 5w3d. We didn't... My Dr did the same thing and called me to prepare me to miscarry because he claimed that with hcg levels as high as mine we would expect the heartbeat. I went back at 6w and the hb was there just like it should have been. Drew is nearly 16 months now. I bet you will see the hb within the next week and a half. Hang in there!

I agree. You are very early. I wouldn't worry just yet. You wouldn't believe how many women have similar stories of being told that they were going to miscarry and then they didn't. Do get your hcg checked again in two days. Did they give you your hcg levels at the ER?

just to note.. as well for some reassurance here.. my friend at 16 weeks was told her baby had no heartbeat... and was told to wait 4 long weeks til she was 20 weeks for the initial screening ultrasound.. low and behold.. there was a heartbeat and a healthy little boy!.. you can't always trust a machine!

nor the one operating the machine for that matter

I agree, at only 5w and a few days, you aren't likely to see a hb anyways - the heart doesn't start beating until around 6w, sometimes a little earlier, but is very hard to pick up on an u/s machine, especially one that isn't so high tech! I would call your doc and ask for a repeat blood draw for roughly 48 hours after the first draw, they can look to see if the numbers have a good rise.

Just a note, with my DD, I bled heavily at around 8 weeks, she is almost 3, with my current pregnancy, I bled heavily again at about 7.5 weeks, I am now 20.5 weeks along with a healthy baby so far. Bleeding doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, some women just spot/bleed during pregnancy.

I wouldn't worry yet either. Wait until you get the next set of numbers to see if they went up.

Thank you all for te information! I called the ob I have an appt with, they wouldn't talk specifics with me since they haven't seen me yet, but when I mentioned the hcg and heartbeat she seemed surprised and asked me what hospital I went to. She also said it sounds like the doctor didn't know what he was talking about. The whole situation caught me off guard especially since the tech said the sonogram was ok except the heartbeat. The ob also told me they won't see people before six weeks just for the fact that they feel a sonogram before that can be innaccurate. They said to keep my appt for Tuesday and they will do another hcg test and sonogram. I want to say he said hcg was 10000 ish? Funny that he never mentioned some of the things the tech told me like that I have a cyst on my ovary or that she did see blood near the sac. I think he was just ready for me to leave.

So just an update. I went to the doctor on Tuesday. I was so nervous of what they would tell me after my experience in the ER that I felt like I was going to pass out. They did a pregnancy test there and confirmed I was pregnant. That wasn't my concern. I had been told by the ER doctor that the pregnancy was abnormal and was most likely ectopic or a blighted ovum. Well the OB did a sonogram and sure enough there was the heartbeat!! She told me I showed 6 weeks 3 days. I explained to her what happened and what doctor I saw and she said he was crazy and apologized that I had to worry about that for a week. I think I'm going to be nervous until I pass that 12 week mark but so excited. With all the bad news from the ER I did too much research online and read too many bad stories so I still have some concern. I do have a cyst that she said we need to watch. She said it is normal to have them but it is big so her concern is it bursting. So I am on limited activity, not doing anything that could cause it to burst.

Its crazy that I was able to get better information on a message board than from a doctor. I will definitly not be going to that ER again. I will drive the extra ten minutes to the next hospital. His bad diagnosis caused me a week of horrible worry just because he simply didn't know what he was talking about.
