I use OPKs each cycle just to get a better idea of my body. If you've never used them before and don't know when you typically ovulate I'd suggest starting them around CD 10. As each month passes you'll get a better idea of when you typically ovulate and won't have to use as many tests each cycle as you'll be able to narrow down that time frame better.
Starting to test for LH depends on when you normally ovulate. The best way to have a clear idea is by keeping track of your temperature and charting the results daily. You do this by taking your temperature every morning, as soon as you wake up. Also, keep an eye on your cervical fluid as it begins to show up after your period. Know that the closer you are to ovulation the more 'eggwhite' the consistency of it will be. Eggwhite fluid is usualy clear and stretchy. THIS will be your most fertile time and it will also be a time when you will be able to get a positive on an opk.
You can buy a good amount of opk's online for very little money, and once you have a good indication that you may be about to peak then switch to a 'big girl test' like clearblue digi whcih gives a happy face when the peak shows up. Once you confirm the LH surge know that you will most likely ovulate within the next 12 to 24 hours.
And if you are actively ttc make sure to bd within the 3 days prior to ovulation, ovulation day and the following (if its at all possible ) to increase your chances of conception
Good luck to you!! and baby dust
