Here's the deal: I am not trying to get pregnant by any means but I have been very sloppy with my pills lately (which I know is bad!) I'll try to organize this so it's easy to follow...

December 17-21: Regular, normal period
December 23: Supposed to start new pack, forgot...
December 26: Started new pack 3 days late
January 1-3: Forgot to take pills (took 2 days of double doses once I noticed)
January 3-8: Sporadic bleeding, started out almost like a normal period, but without any cramping, and now it's light brown spotting.

During this time I had unprotected (pull out) sex on the 26th, 30th, 31st, and 5th. I am 23 years old and also on antibiotics.

My real period isn't expected until January 15th so it's soon to just take a test and be done with it, so I'm hoping for some reassurance (or blunt honesty) of my chances of being pregnant given these signs. I am assuming that the bleeding is from my less then accurate use of the pill, but the fact that I am bleeding is a good sign that I am not pregnant, right? Should I even bother taking a test, and if so, when? Is it likely that I will still have my regular period on the 15th even though I've been bleeding for days now?

Well it depends on how often you have been taking the pill and for how long. Usually they say the month you are currently on will still be in your system next month. When you keep taking the pill regularly it kind of builds up in your system (which is why it's not always possible for women to get pregnant right when they come off the pill, assuming they have been on it a while).

I'm not saying it's NOT possible, but I was on the pill for 8 years and routinely forgot and never had an oops. was off them for a year (not ttc) and got pregnant (a bit of an oops- but a great one!)

It's *probably* just your body trying to have a period since you haven't been taking a pill the last few days. The pill usually will regulate your cycle to be about 28 days, but that doesnt mean your body is naturally a 28 day cycle. so being off the pill for a bit may make your body say "hey, pills! You can control AF! I do! muahaa!!" or something like that

Anyway, good luck! Test in a week if you aren't still sure

I have never heard this before. Where did you get this from, out of curiosity?

Simply missing one pill can lead you to get pregnant, let alone missing so many at numerous times. Furthermore, being on some types of antibiotics can render your pill ineffective, and your physician or pharmacist should have told you this.

If your boyfriend has been pulling out every time you've been having sex, you're less likely to get pregnant...but it isn't impossible.

If you don't want a baby, I'd suggest being a lot more careful. I'd also recommend a different type of birthcontrol...as not taking the pill correctly can cause havok in your body. It can really cause all sorts of problems...I really wish doctors made people more aware at what messing with your hormones can do.

Taking a pregnancy test in a week or so may be a good idea.

Good luck!

The pill can actually leave your system pretty quickly and that's most likely your "real" period from the 3rd-8th,because the synthetic hormones from the pill aren't controlling your periods making them a perfect 28 days.I came off the pill and 2 weeks later DH & I had sex,he pulled out & I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks later when my period didn't show, opps!!!Surprise.Urchin is correct about the antibiotics making the pill less effective.I also agree about finding a more effective birth control, maybe one were you don't need to rememeber to take daily.
Some people get pregnant right off the pill, misuse of the pill and pulling out method.Only thing to do is wait it out & see.Good luck!!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to respond I'm usually pretty good with remembering to take them (I've been on the pill for almost 4 years now) but things just got all jumbled up and I was spacey over the holidays... Not that that is a very good excuse. I'm just really nervous :/ but I really hope it turns out okay... From reading a lot of other peoples' stories on here, I feel a little bit assured that getting pregnant isn't always the easiest thing, even under ideal conditions, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and be more careful from here on out. I'll let yall know how it turns out. You ladies are really great!

In my opinion... I don't think you're pregnant.

I only say this based on my own experience but I was on the pill for 10+ years (stopped last May, got pregnant in July) but while I was on it, I would miss pills, or stop my pack 2-3 pills early to get my "period" early if I had an event or somewhere to be, etc. Can't say I didn't worry about the possibility of getting pregnant, but it just never happened. I think the pill builds up in your system ... and as long as you were taking them, even though not everday, it should (I stress, should) prevent ovulation.

Either way, you'll know once you test.

[QUOTE=Urchin;26949958]I have never heard this before. Where did you get this from, out of curiosity QUOTE]

My doctor always said not to completely rely upon bc pills until after taking the first full pack (month's worth) and that it's not always possible for women to get pregnant immediately coming off from the pill. But there are those that do, so I guess everyone's body is different! I think it also depends on the type you take. There should be an insert in your pack that tells.

I was off the pill for a year, and then started taking the pill for 2 weeks (on time everyday) and got pg, but I knew that was possible since I had just started taking it.

Hey I am not sure if anyone has added this yet or not but Antibiotics also make the pill not effective in most people. If you are taking antibiotics you should really use a backup birth control method. I had a friend get pregnant twice while she was on the pill and taking antibiotics (you think she would have remembered after the first little one)

Yes you can get pregnant. Especially with not starting the pack on time, missing two in a row, and to top it off on antibiotics.

With birth control pills its a good idea to always keep condoms around for the inevitable oops

I guess I understand that it is possible to get pregnant by not following the bc instructions properly (I'm on triorthocycline btw), but because I have been bleeding so much since the missed doses, that is probably a good indication that I am in the clear, right? You couldnt bleed and be pregnant, correct? Its still too early to test... I was thinking I would maybe Saturday or Sunday morning as my "real" period is supposed to start Monday/Tuesday...

You can bleed while pregnant. It happens more than you'd think.

Yes you can bleed while pregnant. Remember also that the bleeding from bcp isnt a "real" period, its just withdrawel from the hormones in the pill.

First of all, I want to say thank you all so much for being such a helpful, supportive crew. This site is such a great resource and I'm happy I stumbled upon it I wish I could contribute to the other posts, but I am sadly so ignorant in this subject matter I would probably do more harm than good!

Speaking of ignorance... I have been waiting for my period due date to test... but I have screwed everything up so much, I'm not really sure when that even is. I was originally planning on taking the 3 pills i missed at the beginning of the month at the end, (aka this Sunday-Tuesday), which would push my period til like next Friday. I have been continuing to spot for over a week now (Jan 3-Jan 11), not alot of blood, just enough to ruin every pair of panties I own because I keep thinking it must be over, and then its not...

What do I do? Take the missed pills? Skip them and wait til the intended day of my period (next Tuesday) to test? I picked up one of those first response tests that says you can do it 5 days before your missed period, so does that mean it would work if I did it tomorrow (Saturday)? Do the tests even work if you are on the pill? So many questions I know.... I am just really confused and I feel like I really messed things up internal with myself

Thanks again!

Well what i would is not take anymore pills. I would let AF come and continue to test unitl af shows or you get bfp. Then if AF comes start over and completely fresh with your cycles and pills. Thats just what I would do
