Beginning of the month I was put on antibiotics and since then my SO and I have been having unprotected sex. I have been on the pill since switching from depo last year. When I looked at period tracker on my phone, I noticed that every day we had sex was one of my most fertile days. I am honestly just wondering, how many people got pregnant like this? And what the chances of it happening?
I've never gotten pregnant like that, but I have been on BC and taken antibiotics.. As soon as I started the antibiotics, I started my period regardless of where in the BC pack I was. So I'm assuming that it really does cancel it out. You're supposed to use condoms or some other BC method while you're on antibiotics and BC.
I've personally never taken antibiotics while on the pill. I've known several people who have gotten pregnant taking antibiotics while on the Pill because they didn't know it could happen. So yes, antibiotics can make the birth control pill less effective.
Yeah we are totally aware that the birth control would become less effective on the antibiotics. We just weren't thinking and didn't take precautions, I just wanted to figure out if I should be worried or not.
You should always use a back up method when taking antibiotics. It doesn't cancel it out per say, but it does make it less effective.
This. Not everyone who is on the pill and takes antibiotics will get pregnant or anything. I have friends who used no backup and never got pregnant. But I do have a friend that did get pregnant on pill with antibiotics- she had strep and didn't use backup.
Usually most antibiotics will carry a warning say that just in case but often enough they don't do much to the pill, especially if you've been on it a while. There's a few certain types that they know for sure mess with it but with the rest there isn't much evidence to show that it does much of anything to the effectiveness of the pill, especially the run of the mill general antibiotics. I do know one girl who got pregnant on the pill while taking antibiotics but I don't know how good she was with taking it properly either as a young teenager. In the 7 odd years I was on the pill I had to take antibiotics plenty of times (prone to chest infections and UTIs) and never got pregnant. I think we used a barrier method once but other than that never bothered. Buuuuuut... you never know. If you want to avoid pregnancy then it's better to be safe than sorry and use a backup while taking them and for a week after you stop taking them.
