Hi, my name's Maggi, and I'm mom to Jenna, our first baby. She has been struggling with reflux for I don't know how long. It seems to be getting worse, and I wonder if it doesn't have to do with her having a growth spurt. She was on Axid for a little while, but that stopped working (it often does, I've read), and so now we're on to Prevacid, with so far no change. She's been in so much pain that she's not sleeping much, anymore (think a few hours total every 24 hours -- it's scary). She sleeps best on me, so I hold her almost nonstop.
I'm trying to let the Prevacid do it's thing, and we finally figured out how to give it to her so she gets all the little grits in her mouth (instead of inside the syringe, in the cup, etc.), but waiting 30 minutes to feed her is such a pain. I'm waiting on asking her doctor about Zegerid, which is an instant release PPI that comes in a powder that can be put in some water (or even her formula) and given to her with a meal. I think it's not prescribed first because of the sodium content.
It's nice to meet some more people who are going through what we are, right now. It's so heartbreaking to watch your child scream in pain, and not be able to do much to help.
I've been reading a lot of information on the website, infantreflux.org. It's extremely well-researched and informative, so you might want to check it out if you haven't already.
This board is really helpful. All of us are pretty much going through the same struggles, and it is hard to see your LO going through this and feeling like there is no control.
My son is 7 months and was dx with reflux at 2mos old. We tried Zantac, Reglan, and Prevacid. He is currently on Reglan and Prevacid and is doing much better. He has his good and bad days which is normal. Right now he is teething so the reflux is of course acting up.
Something I noticed with the Prevacid is that it can take 2 weeks before you start to see a difference. how long has Jenna been on it? Do you give it 2 times a day or just 1 time? Noah was getting it 1 time a day and by the time it was later in the day he was miserable so now he gets it 1 time in the am and then again in the pm. The worst part was having to give it to him 30 minutes before a feeding. I dont know what kind of feeding scedule Jenna is on but for us what seems to work is giving it to Noah 30 minuted before his 2nd bottle of the day (usually at about 9:30am). If we would try and give it to him before his 1st bottle those 3omintues were hell because he wakes up so hungry. We do the same thing with his 2nd dose - it's before his dinner and his bottle.
I keep rambling, but I hope I am helping a bit. Good Luck and keep us posted.
