So, Ian had terrible reflux, and we had to adjust his Zantac dose several times when he was a baby. It seemed like every time he gained an ounce it needed adjustment. Well, his first pediatrician was pretty aggressive in his treatment, and finally at one point he doubled Ian's dose from 2.5ml twice a day to 5.0ml twice a day, and after that point we never had to adjust it again. At 18 months he now only takes 5.0ml once a day at night in his bedtime bottle, which he doesn't always finish.

So, Lily has bad reflux, too. She started out on 1.0ml twice a day, and at her 2 month appointment, I begged the doctor to up it, and she upped it to 2.5ml twice a day. At about 3 months, I noticed it wasn't help, so I upped it myself to 5.0ml twice a day.

Then we had 3 glorious weeks of what seemed like normal babyhood.

Well, now she's exhibiting signs that the dose isn't working. She's been up until 4am 2 nights in a row just sobbing, and she's waking up choking on spit up.

Her doctor's office won't prescribe a higher dose of Zantac (they say that they could without harming her, but their practice doesn't believe in anything higher, they actually don't like the 5.0ml dosage she's on.

So, they want to switch her to something else. Problem is we tried Prevacid early on with Ian and it was a disaster. After 2 days we knew it wasn't working, and switched him back to Zantac. I'm worried we're going to switch Lily with the same results.

So, I have a couple questions. Anyone have more than 1 reflux baby and have Zantac work for one, but not the other?

If you switched from Zantac because it wasn't working, did the Prevacid take effect right away??

We were doing so well, and DH is about to have to work for like 6 weeks straight (including weekends), and if I can't get Lily back to sleeping good, I'm going to have a nervous breakdown.

Thanks, ladies!!

V. =)

I will respond more later, but the doses go by WEIGHT and age. You could be possibly overdosing your daughter and causing more harm then good. Not only overdosing but your body will be a tolerance for things. Which in the long run could harm her more.
I would call the doctor, have her weighed and then have HIM/HER adjust it appropriately. Its a weight/age thing not ohh this doesn't work lets up it thing.

Our doctor put my son on Zantac and it didn't help so they switched him to Prilosec which had to be compounded and it worked so much better. Today I took my daughter (8 weeks old) for her 2 month check up and the Zantac wasn't helping her either so the called in Prilosec for her and now it comes in granules you mix in a little water, hopfully it will help her too. I would talk to your doctor about trying prilosec. Good Luck!!

Sorry had to go get my daughter.
I have 2 daughters (well 3 but only 2 GERDlings)
Crystal is 2 yrs old and still has severe Gerd in which she sees a GI specialist every 2months unless needed more. She has random tests thru out the year to make sure she is ok and its not getting worse, not causing scarring to her esophagus etc.
She is on 20mg nexium once daily and maalox as needed for breakthru symptoms (only 1/2 to 1 tsp at 30lbs).
She was on zantac, prevacid, axid etc none worked like nexium does. Its the only thing that FINALLY got her to sleep thru the night.

Calleigh we skipped zantac and went right not prevacid but she was placed on it in the NICU and they knew the history of Crystal as she was a NICU kid too.
She has been on it for about 3.5months now.

I would see a pediatric GI not a pediatrician. For more reasons then this, mainly knowledge on treatments and testing.

Our ped I have never seen for the gerd for either except to get a referral.

I'm not overdosing her. She's a huge baby, just like her brother. She's on the same dose her brother was on the same age and weight. And just like her brother, she's gained about a pound and now the dose isn't working for her. Having gone through this with my son for the last 18 months, I know how Zantac works.

The problem is, her ped isn't aggressive about the treatment of Gerd the way my son's ped was. We're switching to Prevacid now to see if that helps. After that I will get a referral to a GI doctor.

Your 4m old weighs the same as you 18month old?

Also right there you say your daughter at 4m is getting double what her brother is getting at 18ms.

Sorry to offend you but I have dealt with this for 2 plus years with my daughter and know that its weight and age, and that your 4m old would NOT be on double the dosage of a 18m old. I have gone thru Zantac, prevacid, prilosec, axid, protonix before we got relief for my 2 yr old with Nexium.

If your not satified with your doctors, call the hospital and ask for a GI referral or find another ped.

Personally I don't see a ped for my daughters GERD, because they don't know enough about the testing and proper administrating of meds.
