Took my three month old in and left feeling a little disappointed.
Suzannah is gaining weight just fine (she doesnt have regular reflux though...she has silent reflux where she RARELY spits up...if ever...the mucus vomiting is every other day...she also only has a BM every 5-7 days since birth)
Because she is gaining weight just fine the Dr wanted us to just keep htings how they are and hope she grows out of it. He didnt even check her throat.
He said he would offer a prescription of Prevacid, but that he didnt think she needed anything more.
To me that is ridiculous.
She is screaming in pain, throwing up thick-stringy mucus, (even spit up some mucus today), she coughs all the time, has constant hiccups, wheezes, excessive swallowing, and that is WITH the Zantac.
he told me that I could ask for a referral, but that the GI specialist is ALL THE WAY in Seattle. I dont care where it is! I would drive to another state if it would make her feel better.
So...if you were me would you wait a couple weeks to see how the prevacid works, would you just relax and hope she grows out of it, or would you just say "screw you'(not really...I normally really like her Dr...but he is not a pediatrician. He is a whole family Dr and I am just wondering if he doesnt have enough experience here to make a good call) to the DR and ask for a referral?
What should I do next? She is throwing up the mucus every other day. Last two times she choked on it...literally mucus stuck to her face and my shoulder when I pulled her away. She choked sitting straight up on my shoulder!
Michelle Mom To:
try the prevacid. prevacid is a ppi and zantac is a ph blocker, they are different types of reflux meds that work different. ph blockers dont work very well for serious reflux. ppis almost completely shut down the stomachs production of acid. they are the best defense against reflux. zantac is weight sensitive meaning it has to be increased as your baby grows but prevacid is not. you increase the dose until you find the correct dose for your baby.
if you went to the gi they would probably start her out on prevacid or prilosec, both of which are ppis and have you follow up in a month or so. keep in mind though that reflux meds dont always stop the refluxing, the idea is to neutralize the acid so the refluxing isnt painful anymore. sometimes without the overactive acid the refluxing does stop though.
anyway, i hope the prevacid helps. my ds was on it until he was 3 and my dd who is 5 1/2 is still on it. reflux sucks. give the prevacid at least 2 weeks to work and i bet you see better results with it than you did with the zantac.
I agree with doing the Prevacid. I would also ask for the referral if you can make the trip. Often it takes weeks or longer to get in with a specialist, so you could at least have an appointment set if the Prevacid doesn't work. *hugs*
