Hi:

I heard about formula thickner but never took much interest into it until I ran into another twin mom (of 7 month old girls) at a local baby store last week.

She mentioned she knew of another twin mom at the hospital whom twin used formula thickner and it cured their reflux.

Now I am curious. Do your child use a formula thickner? Does it work well? Which brand?

Thanks,
Jessica

Formula thickeners can be a life saver for some babies and for others it can be the cause of aspiration. For Gabe it wouldn't have worked because he refluxed everything regardless of thickness. All it would have done was cause what he refluxed to get stuck in his throat instead of making it out his mouth.

We had the same issues with a thickener. A little rice helped, but he also refluxed up everything, so it doesn't really work for us.

Our pedi told us to put a little rice cereal in her formula. I've been to scared to try it.

One ped. told us rice cereal, tried it and it made him cough/choke more. The second ped. sent us for the barium swallow test and the feeding therapist there said to use Simply Thick, after the second ped. instructed me to thicken his formula.

The Simply Thick seems to be helping along with Zantac. We also changed from Good Start to Alimentum for a trial, not sure if that is making a difference or not. We will try Good Start again in a week to see if the formula really does make a difference for him.
