I've heard that some teachers create classroom Facebook pages. Do you have one or would you think about having a FB page for your students?

Right now, no. I don't feel as though I know enough to prevent all that could go wrong. I need to know I have 100% control. It's a shame, though, because the possibilities could be endless.

No. My district wouldn't allow that. I could (haven't, but would be allowed to) create a classroom blog through one of two district approved sites. We have to make sure we have complete control on it, and FB doesn't allow that. We also can't have the district name, school name or any of the logos for either anywhere on the blog.

Lurking -

I have a personal one - but would never have a "school only" one. Apparently there have been issues with teachers having one and then a link pops up, kids click it and it leads them somewhere, then somewhere else etc. and parents get upset, lawsuits etc. Too much liability for me. Also kids clicking on other kids FB pages that may be inappropiate or kids thinking that I'm looking at their inappropriate pages...you see where I'm going.
I'm not about to loose my job or credential over something stupid.

Good point. There are always a lot of links and stuff on the side, and you have no idea what you're going to see over there.

BTW...we'd love to have you stick around! What grade/subject area do you teach?

Very interesting that you can't have the names/logos on a school approved blog! That's pretty intense.

Yeah, my district is intense (that's a good word for it). They have regulation on top of regulation here. It's crazy to say that we can use a blog, but make sure it doesn't say anything about where we teach. Their concern (this is what we were told during a training) is that the comments left by students would directly reflect on the school/district and that they want to have complete control over anything that would reflect upon the district. I think they get a little paranoid, but it's a huge district and maybe they feel that complete control is required in a district this size. I know I had more leeway in the smaller district I was at before coming here.

Nope...wouldn't do it. Way too much liability, and the "what if" factors. What if they click on something inappropriate...what if they post something inappropriate before I can do anything about it, etc.

Facebook is blocked in my district.
