OK, so our school got a letter to the editor written about it (since education has been big time in the news here because of all the things our legislature just did). And in the letter to the editor the parent listed out 16 movies that are being shown at the school (according to him). And was like "Enough said." Because there were 16 movies that he disapproves of (Movies like To Kill a Mocking Bird) we're ALL doing a bad job. And the comments on the online version of the paper were many bad about us.

It made me so mad. I have never even showed a CLIP of a movie in my class..."This is how to do an Algebra problem." Well wouldn't that be boring...

But, I totally see the justification for showing movie clips (which I guarantee you is what MOST of the 16 on the list were). And even sometimes a whole movie can be justified. Just because teachers are showing movies does NOT mean they aren't teaching. I almost guarantee you they pause within the movie and teach within it and ask questions and have handouts during the movie and thus are teaching even DURING the movie.

Why are people so...you fill in the blank...

::filling in:: So ignorant? Quick to judge?

This is where the principal should be able to justify the reasons for watching them, if he/she is "in the loop" of what's going on. I would have to say something if somebody was trying to give my school a bad name.

He's going to write back and justify it all I hear. I totally think the writer of the letter was trying to give us a bad name right before a vote about stuff, so badly timed.

Luckily the PEOPLE mostly seemed supportive as the legislature screwed us over.

Christine just popping in. This person clearly does not understand education. Showing clips is considered integrating technology and in some cases using informational text since text can also be in visual form. This in turn helps reach students with multiple modalities and learning styles which is a High Impact Teaching Strategy. Not to mention that interpreting visual information is considered one of the 21st century skills.

Yeah, but it wasn't even just one person. The articles get published online and people comment and the comments were at least 50% in agreement with the article that all teachers suck and we just show movies.
