Please join me in praying for those affected today in Connecticut. As both a teacher and a parent, I cannot imagine what they are going through. My thoughts and prayers go out to that entire community and to all of us a nation.

We had a lockdown drill yesterday and my sixth grade students asked me what would happen if the intruder came into our room. I told them that I would get them all behind my desk and stand in front of them and protect them the best I could. It's such a sad thing to think about. One of the boys said, "I will help you. I will protect you." I looked at him and said, "No you won't." Just the thought of one of my kids trying to protect me and possibly getting hurt was horrible. I'm glad they know now that I would do anything for them.

The Monday after it happened, I walked into my classroom and thought about where I would hide them all if I was ever in that situation. So sad! And all this talk about teachers having guns (never, ever, ever in a million years!!!) and armed guards at every school makes me even sadder. Last night, my six-year-old asked if a crazy man was going to come into her school and shoot the kids in her class. I had to hold back the tears as I reassured her and helped her fall asleep. Ugghh! What is this world coming to?

I was fortunate that one of my 2nd graders brought it up. I wasn't sure how I would respond to my class if they asked questions about it.

It's a scary world, isn't it??
