I have an 8 week old and I'm having a problem feeding him. My milk supply and flow was very good. I had a lot of milk and it got to the point that I would only feed from one breast per feeding. I don't know if my body is trying to regulate my milk supply or what, but now I'm having such a hard time feeding my son. 3 days ago it all started happening. When I feed my son, it takes forever for the milk letdown to happen now. It can take 10 minutes or more; it used to take about 15 seconds. When the letdown does happen, the milk flows only for about a minute, when before it would flow the whole time he was feeding. Now, it's like nothing is coming out. And, I'm only getting one letdown. My son sucks and sucks and he's getting very frustrated. He pulls at the nipple and grunts and whines because there's no milk flow. When I check my nipple, it's a little wet from milk- if I hand express I might get a squirt or two. If I pump right after trying to feed, nothing comes out. I've been trying to pump to stimulate, thinking that maybe my milk supply is going away. When I pump, I can get maybe an ounce, sometimes two if it's been a long time since the last time trying to feed. This is getting frustrating because my son is very hungry and fussy now. He's simply not nearly getting enough to eat. I put him on the breast often, and he's sucking like crazy, but just a tiny bit is coming out. My son used to be able to suck, swallow, suck, swallow. Now, he's able to do that during the initial letdown (for about a minute), but after that he just sucks and sucks and I rarely hear him swallow. (Is there supposed to be a swallow after each suck?) I'm getting desparate. I don't want to give him a bottle because I heard that can make this situation worse. What do I do??? He's not getting enough wet or poopy diapers. I feel so bad for my hungry baby.
I don't really have any advice either... I saw a Lactation Consultant last week and she was able to tell me that my ds was eating 3.5 oz per nursing session by weighing him before and after nursing. Maybe you could see one or go to the pedi's office and do the weight check to see if he is actually getting much to eat. That may ease your mind.
If 4 wet & no poopy, then put a sheet of toilet paper b/w his skin & the diaper & check it once an hour to see if its wet - with diapers these days then it might be difficult and hes actually wetting more than you realize.
count diapers tomorrow while following the 3 day nursing sabbatical & keep me posted on how many wet & how many poopy... and in the meanwhile ill look for you an english speaking LC
The base should have one, as well as the LLL in Japan should have some recommendations.
