J.J. is almost 6 months old and is eating 4 oz. of pumped milk per feeding. I plan on starting him on solids in about a week. I know that I'm supposed to add solids after a feeding because milk is still supposed to be his main source of food. Do I feed him the same 4 oz. and add solids to that? Or, do I give him less milk to make room for the solids? Also, as he gets older, will he be eating more than 4 oz. of milk, or will it stay the same since I will be adding solids? KWIM?- As he gets older and hungrier, do I give him more milk and the same amount of solids, or do I give him more solids and stay with the 4 oz. of milk? And, once he hits a year old, and on table foods, do you know how much milk he will need then? J.J. is my first and I'm totally clueless and confused when it comes to milk and solids. I hope I didn't confuse you all, because I totally just confused myself! LOL
I didn't start Teagen on any solids until she was almost 8 months old. When I did that, I still offered the breast first then about 1/2 hour later I gave her the food. She was much older than your little one so she wasn't eating as frequently. Now I just BF on demand and she eats all day....
I too was confused about the whole thing when Teag was little, that's why I decided to delay solids since breastmilk was all she needed and I thought, why put myself through the headache of trying to figure out what to give and when to give it when she's getting enough nutrionally from my breastmilk.
I hope someone else can give you some good advice, I just feel like once you introduce solids, it's hard to keep your supply up because baby is full from the food. That's what happened with Camden and he quit nursing at a year. Teagen's still going strong.
I would hate to feed him, then offer a 4 oz bottle of breastmilk and have him not want it, kwim??
Hopefully other mama's will have better advice for you! Sometimes being a mom is soooo confusing, even when you aren't a first time mom!

I know Im supposed to always offer her the boob first, then solids. Im not sure about pumping and bottle feeding. Im curious too, cause I want to try and get my baby eating from a bottle from her dad at least occasionally so I can go grocery shopping without it being like a marathon trying to get home so I can feed her
i would feed her just as much milk as you normally do and then wait at least 1/2 hour before offering solids. we started solids a few weeks ago. i started off waiting 1/2 hour before introducing solids and now i try to wait a little longer...closer to an hour because she didn't seem hungry at all when i offered. she is still nursing just as much regardless of the solids so i guess i am doing something right.

We do bottles during the day since Alexa is at daycare and at 6 months she was taking 5 or 6 ounces per feeding. I usually send 3 bottles with her to daycare. When I introduced solids, first I only gave them to her once in the morning after the morning nursing. Then by 7 months we went to twice a day solids - lunch (30 - 45 minutes after the 2nd bottle at daycare) and dinner (when we got home from daycare - 30 minutes to an hour after 3rd bottle).
Right now at over 8 months she has the same amount of bottles at daycare and is taking a little less - usually 4 to 5 oz. I introduced a breakfast meal/snack, so she has some solids 3 times a day.

I would always nurse Abby, then wait maybe an hour, and offer solids. That was she wasn't full and I felt like she would be more willing to try them, but not hungry either. She nursed on demand, so whenever she was hungry after that, I would let her nurse.
It seems really confusing, and I think every parent has the same thought process when starting solids. What's the plan? Really, you don't need one. Just play things by ear and follow your babies cues. I just increased her amount of solids whenever it felt right, and since she nursed on demand, she would nurse when she wanted too. I started table foods when she seemed ready and just slowly transitioned into them for about a month. I always kept on a schedule on though, which made it easier. When we started solids, she had them once a day, around the same time. So when I added a second feeding of solids, then they would be around the same time every day. Eventually, she started eating 3 meals a day and they fell at my normal meal times. From there, she was able to nurse when she wanted and I would let her eat the amont she wanted at each meal. Snacks were just to keep her busy for a while (we started after 8-9 months) and then eventually, she was getting a snack most mornings and afternoon for nutrition. By then, she was old enough to tell me if she wanted to nurse or if she wanted real food. It will all work itself out!

Joshua just started solids last week and he's 6 months old. We started him on cereal for 1 week at our dinner time (1tbsp cereal + breastmilk). 2 days ago he had his first taste of sweet peas (loved it), approx 2 tbsp sweet peas. I give him his normal bottles (4 oz around 6 times a day) and then I give him cereal around noon and peas (or whatever food we're doing) at our dinner time. Of course if he gets off track with his bottles we are flexible on his food times.
I have no idea if that's right, it's just what we're doing and it's working for us...so it's right for us.
And as for the amount of milk, our pedi said that it's just fine that he's taking 4 oz bottles and some babies his age are eating 7 or 8 oz at a time...she said that some babies never take more than 4 oz at a time and it just means feedings more often.
And try not to stress too much about adding solids. This should be a fun and exciting milestone, not a headache, so break out the camera and enjoy it

I had no idea u were supposed to nurse and then give solids...Jaxon nurses in the morning, eats cereal fruit and veggie @ lunch time, nurses about a 1/2 hour later and then every 2-3 hours after that til bedtime @ 10am
