Sounds like thrush to me...

I have had it several times and one nipple is always worse than the other for me.

Does it hurt worse during the latch on?

Get some Gentian Violet and call your Doc. I usually have to get a script for difucan as well as use the gentian violet to get rid of the nasty stuff.

Good Luck!

Could also be blanching. Does your nipple look white? Usually it will happen on both sides though?

Thrush would be my first guess for sudden pain when nursing. The only symptoms I had with thrush was the pain, and DD didn't have any symptoms. My pain would almost come and go, some times it would be really bad, other times, I didn't notice any pain at all. One side was sometimes worse than the other too because it can be passed between the breasts. I'd start a treatment of gentian violet and if your symptoms improve over the next 48 hours, it's probably thrush.

Call around to your local pharmacies and they can tell you if they have it. It's usually behind the counter, not on the shelf, so you'll have to ask for it. It's very inexpensive though, mine was $2-3 for the bottle, which I still have plenty of. It's very effective too, and works quickly.

I found that the last 2 months my nipples hurt when AF was going to make her appearance and for no other reason. Is this a possibility? I thought it might be thrush but it only happened a week before AF appeared and stayed like that till the day before she came.

Does your baby have her top teeth yet? I find now that my dd has hers she rubs them on my nipple when she nurses and it can be quite painful. Just throwing that out there as another idea.....

... because you have a baby sucking off them!

(lame, I know!)

Seriously, how are things going? Was it a growth spurt or thrush as many of the ladies before suggested?
